Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

I just have a question - more curiosity than anything. I recently bought a 1970 GMC SWB Sierra Grande. I know the Cheyenne Super is pretty rare but in comparison how are the Sierra Grandes? Is that the equivilent of a Super? .. or is the SG package the same as a CST, etc. ?

Not meaning to sound any different than intended but I haven't personally seen too many SWB Sierra Grandes and just wondering is someone would know production numbers, what packages were offered, etc. Just trying to learn.

Thanks.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

From what I've read on here (and what I can remember), there were probably 1 GMC to every 4 Chevy's. So GMC's are pretty rare in themselves, by that logic

Smile Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

To my recollection, the Sierra Grande option (and the Cheyenne Super option for that matter) were not yet available in 1970...are you sure this lists out on the spid or is it badged as a Sierra Grande now? It might have an external badging upgrade for appearance/custom purposes.
I agree with nightmare that the GMC full option trucks definitely were a rarer item compared to the chevys.
My two bits.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

I think a 69-70 Sierra Grande would be the equivalent of a 69-70 CST.
(since the CST was the "top of the line" trucks for those years)

The 71-72 Sierra Grande would be the equivalent of a 71-72 Cheyenne Super.
(since the CST name went away and was replaced by the Cheyenne Super)

EDIT:
What were the top of the line GMC's called in 69 and 70?

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

Makes sense .. and why it just says CST on the SPID.

But, it has the SG badging on it too (?) that's what I was trying to figure out.. Maybe just a naming / year thing.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

I found this,...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_C/K

It says the top of the line GMC was a Super Custom 1500,... but is wikipedia correct?
Member Special-K would know.

Also this quote from Joesjunk.

I parted a 1970 GMC Serria Grande. I thought it was strange, but the option sheet proved it. The truck now belongs to board member "Bucket". I did a cab and clip swap on the 1 ton he has. See if he has a pic of the glove box sticker. I know I have it somewhere too.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

What it is,in 69/70 the Sierra and Sierra Grande package was an Option not a trim level. I mean it was ordered on top of a Custom or Super Custom.GMC often used the Chevy trim level name on the SPID. Super Custom was the CST equivalent and Custom=Custom in 69/70. These were a late '69 option that gave the GMCs more than was offered yet on Chevys. Headliner and cargo light, for instance. I believe these were still options in '71 also and it wasn't until '72 that they became actual trim levels. By '71 they were equal to the Cheyenne and Cheyenne Super. Before that they were on a level by themselves. From people I have known who worked at GM Truck plants they say Every 5th truck was a GMC. That may not have been cast in stone, but more the general ratio. A shortbed Sierra Grande is quite the collector piece in my book. It's like a GTO/442/GS compared to a Chevelle SS. They're a cool, but you saw the most Chevelles.

The spid on my 71 sierra grande has both the "custom sport truck" and "Sierra grande custom" options listed.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

I have a 1970 Sierra Grande as well. SPID lists Z17 Sierra Grande Truck, as well as Z84 Custom Sport Truck.

A "Sport" 133-inch longhorn 3/4-ton truck. Watch out, Corvettes!

Looking at it, I'm curious why they'd list side marker lights... weren't they required equipment from 67 or 68 onwards? My 70 SG has them, as does I imagine every truck of that year, but doesn't call them out on the SPID.

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

Maybe mine was built in a different plant, or an early build 70 (?) Who knows but I don't think it's 'not' a Sierra Grande truck because it's not listed on the SPID. (?) If it was an appearance package (?) .. hard to say but I like it !

Re: Cheyenne Super vs. Sierra Grande question

Eyeballing some custom built Americans with the gray spokes. Like TT2s but a satin center cap like the old road racers used to run. More of a flat looking cap .. know what i mean?

The side markers in '68 & '69 were reflectors. Lights were an option starting in '69 and became standard after that. I'm surprised to see a '70 with them listed as an option.Learn something new everyday. The only thing I can figure is it's a very early '70 and for some reason they were still listing it as an option.
