Rear leaf mount
Finally, I am down to a bare frame (will post pictures later). Now comes the fun part.
When I was pulling the passenger's side rear leaf spring I noticed the rear spring bowed outward. I assumed it was the shackle, however after really looking into it I saw the rear mount for the shackle is shot. The hole has been opened up and needs to be replaced. Is this a piece I can buy aftermarket or something I would need from a donor truck? Thanks. |

Re: Rear leaf mount
Here is an actual picture of mine. The circle is highlighting the part to the frame I am looking for.

Re: Rear leaf mount
You can get a machine shop to fab a billet one. It doesn't look like it would be to much to make, maybe add bushings and a grease fitting.
That looks like it has done alot of work in its day. Good luck Steve |

Re: Rear leaf mount
Thanks for the help guys.
@STEVE60: The truck was a farm truck from South Dakota for all its life. It had been beat on pretty bad. @DWCSR: Thanks Dave.

Re: Rear leaf mount
I've still got the perches on my frame if you still need them send me a PM. I'll make sure they are good enough when I get home tonight. The frame is bare so it would only take a few minutes to get them off and they need to come off anyhow. They won't cost anything but what the priority mail fee is.

Re: Rear leaf mount
Ahhh.. It's the rear you need. I thought it was the front for some reason. Mine are welded on but I could cut them off If mr48chev doesn't square you away.

Yeah I apologize, I tried to be as specific as I could, but seemed I wasn't haha. If you look at the picture above you can see just a little bit of the helper spring that are on the rear leaf springs. I need the rear mount of that. From factory, I believe they came on welded. I appreciate the offer and will keep you updated. Thanks.

Re: Rear leaf mount
The ones I have are good.
Pm me your mailing address if you want them. All I ask is that you pay the price of mailing them and pay it forward at some time in the future. |

Re: Rear leaf mount
I got them off and got them shipped.
This is one of the few times I took something of a frame that I was concerned with keeping in good shape. First I center punched the rivets Then I used a small drill bit as a starter OOps, this one is a bit off center. After working through about three sizes of drill bits I had it to where I could knock the tops off with the bfh and big chisel. First one After a touch up with the flap wheel I got out my old standby chisel and popped them loose. Off they came. Ready to go in the priority mail flat rate box. Off to NY The difficult part was turning the frame over to be able to work on it easily. I'll get the rest of the stuff I need to remove off while I have it flipped over and set it up for the new rear springs. |

Re: Rear leaf mount
Hey Rob,
What springs are you going back with on your frame? S-10? If so I would like to see a write up on that. I have been thinking about doing that for now and come back later with a 4-link

Re: Rear leaf mount
With a grin ear to ear my friend.
This is a prime example of the "over and above" relationships you develop over a forum, something you wouldn't be able to explain to someone who isn't affiliated with the "car/truck scene" online. It is things like this that cease to amaze me. Rob thanks again, I really appreciate all the help. I will be PayPaling you the money today. Again, I cannot thank you enough.

Re: Rear leaf mount
In the process I discovered that drilling the tops of the rivets out progressively with good drill bits to the point where you can take a chisel and knock the head off without beating things to death works very well. Now that the frame is upside down on the saw horses the rest of the stuff that needs to be removed will get removed and I may make a bit of progress if I get the lawn mower started early and get the chores done in time to have a bit of truck time this afternoon.
