305 60cc heads on a 350 block

A friend gave me this engine 3970014 with a set of 305 heads 60cc installed on it. It was in a 1970 chevelle.

What benifit if any will this be compared to running a set of 882 heads.

Appreciate your input.

probably not at all it will most likely hurt ur performance because the 305 heads have very small ports and are restrictive though they will bump up the compression the loss in flow isnt worth it. i would go with the 882's and if the budget allows get em ported and have the larger valves installed

higher compression, BUT, unless ported out the butt, the runners are smaller and wont flow as well

Yet another in agreement...the 305 heads will work if you've got nothing else, but they can't flow enough for even a mild 350, let alone a healthy one.

Just one last thought...remember, pretty much everything they ever did to the 305 was in an effort to find as much torque as possible at any cost. That's why TPI was created, actually; to give the 305 as much torque as the 350, by using those huge intake runners. Though it makes no sense as to why they never took the TPI to the truck side...it would've been a better choice than TBI, stock-to-stock.

the 416 305 heads are the best of the small port heads. they flowed almost as good as any 350 head. the 416 are the HO heads. they will perform well ported and polished, but becareful porting intake runners, they are thin.

I believe that is the combontion that I got with this used 350
14010207 Block 350 2 bolt 1980-85

with 1401416 Heads 1980-86 305 1.84/1.5 58cc

is this going to be too high a compression motor?? Will this make for a good strong engine ?? comments thanks Ed ke6bnl

Regarding compression...with my 64cc Vortecs and flattop pistons, I'm pushing roughly 10.2:1 compression. Dropping the extra 4cc's would raise compression a bit beyond that, even.

305 heads would work a little better on a 327 than they would a 350, simply because there's a little less air that needs to be flowed; however, you still end up with awfully high compression and relatively low flow because the 305 heads were designed for a skinny little bore.

I have done this...and DO NOT recomend it.
While I don't know the casting # of the 305 heads that were given to me, I do know I had to run 93 octain and one bottle of octain booster, plus the timing had to be set at about 4 degrees BTDC. (granted...mine had been milled a bit to get a good surface)
All this for crappy performance.
305 heads are an awsome (cheap) way to update a 283 or a 307 for modern unleaded gasoline...but other than that...they are a last case cenereo.
882 heads have been given a bed reputation. As far as smogger heads go, they are one of the best flowing out there. (the best of the worst if you will)
I have a set of miledly ported 882s on my 350, and it is aproaching 100,000 abusive miles. The guy i got it off of was doing 13s in the 1/4 in a 67 long/fleet, and I sure as hell don't baby it either.
As for overheating and crackig them...I had mine up to 260 degrees once when i tossed a belt on the freeway. She lived to tell about it with no drop in compression.

The 305 head s will poop out around 4500 on a 350.....been there , & tryed that! For a low rpm "grunt motor" , they could work out with the proper cam. good luck, crazyL
