Re: 47-53 Gas tank relocation

We used a 70 mustang tank behind the rear axle.it fit perfect.it is 20 gallons.the only problem is the sending unit is not correct for factory gauge.we took the filler tube that is in the center and relocated it to one side and came through the body right on top of the rear fender.we used the factory filler tube from the original tank.

Largest? It's a cool ride - you don't want to stop at a gas station and talk to all the nice people every 45 minutes? If yer wife is with you you'll be making those P stops anyway

Mine is only 14-gall (by choice), but check this link out - Chevy's of the 40's has a ton of underbed tanks and cells for these old trucks - 19 gallons may be the largest though....

Fred this is for you, so you can see how the gas fill neck comes out on the side fill tank in the Suburban.. the shot of the frame shows a notch you have to put in the top of the frame rail to clear the pipe going into the tank. the last pictures show the gas door after paint.. anything else let me know.. wayne

Re: 47-53 Gas tank relocation

I've got a 20 gallon aluminum tank that was built as a reserve tank for a van conversion on a van my mom had that looks a lot like the tank parkwood has but his is a lot nicer. The bigger tanks hang down pretty low if you have a lowered truck. It's best to make use of that few inches above the frame rails that equal the kick over the axle to get the tank up out of the way as far as you can. The Mustang tanks might be the exception to that when you use a rear fill.

I'd agree with those who say that their bladder or butt can't outdo the smaller tanks but a bigger tank gives guys who do serious road trips some options on buying fuel. Sometimes it's being able to fill up where the price is better and not have to pay resort prices and often it is being able to get to newer stations that should have cleaner gas and not have to stop at the old hole in the wall stations that may have dirt or water in the gas or the brand that your truck just doesn't run on.
