HEI with sb in 6 hole?
This stinks...! I was having fun burning up the neighborhood and lost my spark...condensor, points, primary coil wire (18 kilo-ohms too high?), coil (11.5 kilo-ohms too high? book says 4-10 kilo-ohms)...anyway. I have a tested and working HEI and I am thinking just throw it in but my 283 is sitting in the I-6 (back) slot and it does not look like there is enough room to shoe horn it in there. Anyone running a sb in the 6 holes with an HEI? I don't really want to hammer the firewall to get it in.
Thanks

Yup, It's tight and almost impossible to get the cap on and off, but it's in there.

gr8, does that mean I can install mine sans cap with the motor in place or do you know whether that can be done? Could be that the motor was installed with the dizzy already in place! I guess I could just try but I have so many pending projects that I am trying to minimize my efforts here so that I can be ready for the Monroe Swap Meet...May 17-18! You going to be there?

Mine is VERY close to the firewall in my 4x4, but it does fit. I can take the cap off, but it's hard to get to and somewhat painful. About putting HEI on a 283, I ran into a problem when I tried it. The centering flanges (for lack of a better word) are in different spots between the old style blocks and the new style. My HEI wouldn't fit, it flopped around like a ducks @ss. If I remember right, the block was and early 60's block, so the later models might work with it.

I just rebuilt mine. Its in the 6 spot. I climbed in and stood on the framerail. It still was a pain, but it can definitely be done.

Huck...now you got me worried! I might have to go back to points? I guess I should check the block number...probably easier to just shoe horn it in and see if it is going to work.

stllookn,
I thought I saw that MSD was making low profile distributor caps for HEI distributors. Would that make the situation easier? Not sure if it was only for V8s though. Brian |

I was able to change my intake manifold with the engine in place. That requires removal/installation of the distributor. Mine was an HEI 305, now it's a 350. I can still work on it. Good luck, Scott

gr8, Thanks. I will give it try but I am still a little worried about what Huck said about it flopping around. I have seen that recently with Orence1 and his MSD/big block install. Seems it is more frequent than some of us realize. I can always purchase the same bushing he did to solve the problem...LOL!

I had an HEI in a 283 in the 6 cylinder spot.... I didnt ever remove or install it. The 350 went back in in the 6 cyl spot and the HEI went back in several hundred times.... long story... but I did it without the cap and would put the cap on afterwards... stubby screwdriver....

Stllookn, I've got an original uncut points wire for a six if you need it. Don't know if that would work for you even if you did, but the offers there.

The HEI goes in & out in the I 6 position, with the cap & rotor off.....it does fit damn tight tho! I also have 1 1/2" on the longhorn& it still fits(no hammer work on the firewall)........crazyL
