Re: what's the difference between
I maybe wrong, but I believe that "Custom Deluxe" is Chevy and "Cheyenne" is GMC.

Re: what's the difference between
Here (pics) is the interior differences. A cheyenne has lower molding, chrome bumper, duluxe side markers, cargo light all standard on the exterior to name a few. A custom duluxe can have these but they are optional not standard.

Re: what's the difference between
on top of what sameyrasmea said - Cheyenne is Chevy only. Top of the line for Chev was the Cheyenne Super - as shown in the above pics (4 levels available). Top of the line for GMC was Sierra Grande I believe. I'm not sure what GMC's equivalent was for the Cheyenne though. One other late 72 option was the "Highlander" and it was offered only on the chev Custom Deluxe model - gave one those cool plaid seats and a few other options depending on level of Highlander pkg ordered.
Bottom line is Custom Deluxe was #2 (of 4) in the line-up, Cheyenne was #3 (of 4). In other words, the pic above is a bit misleading, the Custom was the base model, Custom Deluxe was a step up, Cheyenne a step further, etc. Don't read left to right in the pic, but it shows you what came in each. |

Re: what's the difference between
Sure.
Back then, engine upgrades were totally separate from trim upgrades.

Re: what's the difference between
Anything could come with a big block except a 4wd. '72 Cheyennes had woodgrain lower trim and tailgate band standard and Custom Deluxes had black lower trim and lower tailgate trim standard.
Cheyenne interiors had trimmed pedals, woodgrain door panels, carpet, scroll vinyl seat, and headliner. Custom deluxe had standard pedals, deluxe door panels (same panels w/o woodgrain insert, color matched rubber mat, cloth insert full foam seat, and no headliner. Both had lower trim, tailgate trim, chrome window trim, and deluxe dash knobs. You could load a Custom up to have more than many Cheyennes, but no woodgrain trim, deluxe side markers, carpet,or headliner. The Highlander is another story, but still no headliner, tailgate band,or deluxe side markers. A Cheyenne never had lower tailgate trim.

Re: what's the difference between
Really? 4x4 could not get a big block!?!?! I never knew that. Man, I learn something new every day. What was the reason for that Tim? Front crossmember/axle interference?
