resistor to coil vs HEI?

Father in law states that since we are going to an HEI distrubutor and wont need the old coil, there is a resistor he thinks he recalls on these old trucks that regulate the voltage to the old coil (old setup) to about 9 volts and we want a full 12 going to the new HEI distributor, any guidance on this is appreciated?
