What to do with cab and body when off the frame?
I'd like to get some input from folks that have been through a frame-off restoration before. Here's my situation:
I've got the truck stripped down to where the cab is ready to come off. I've selected a body shop. I was going to trailer the truck with the cab and box still attached so that they could remove the cab and body, do the bodywork, and I'd take the frame home and continue restoring the chassis in parallel. That will work, but they want to do the block sanding and prep on the chassis in order to get everything straight, which I agree with. So I'm concerned that I won't be able to turn the chassis around quick enough, and they're a small shop that doesn't want to store a body while they wait on me. So, I was thinking that I'd pull the cab and box off. I have room for them as long as I can keep them mobile enough to roll out of the garage needed. A second chassis would be nice, but its a longhorn so not that easy to find. I was thinking that perhaps just those dollies that movers use would work... a pair under the cab and four under the box, and when I go to trailer the cab and box in I can just use my cab/bed lift to put them on a trailer. So that's my plan at this point, but would like to hear input from others who have worked out the logistics of this before! Thanks, Dave |

Re: What to do with cab and body when off the frame?
I Have a big dolly that we built that has like 4 or 5 inch rubber inflatable tires on it.Its all wood and two of the wheels are swivel casters. Its good for a cab or a box. Also we built a car tissery, that was intended to be for the re-resteration on my 69 Camaro Convertible but I decided to test drive it with this cab I was redoing first. Kinda pricey for a temp fix. But its pretty sweet. We will use it many times so it was worth the investment. I put about $750 into it.plus time of course.

Meant to include these too. Theres the 69 in background and a shot of my finger in the forground. The casters on the tissery are harbor freight like $14 apiece and they all swivel. Not pnematic though.

I have been moving mine around on the cheap harbor freight dollies for 2 years now. Just grease up the bearings on the casters because they rust and then don't want to rotate.
