Ive been in the 73-87 forums quite a bit over the past couple years but I can now welcome myself over here on the '67-'72 forum as I am now the proud owner of a '71 C10. No pictures yet, but I will get them up tomorrow. The powerplant is the original 2 barrel 307 v8 backed by a 700R4 trans with a 12 bolt rear end, unknown gear ratio so far. Its got manual brakes, manual steering, and used to have a manual trans. until the PO installed the 700R4. This truck will soon be my new daily driver so I'll be looking to do things to maximize fuel economy.

Nice, of course we need pics, but as to your fuel economy... you've already got a good start with the 307 and the 700r4. You'll definately need 3.73 rear gearing with that setup, but it should have enough power and do good on the highway.

A 4-barrel quadrajet and HEI will help you maximize your fuel economy too.

great buy !! i agree put a qjet and hei and youll be doing waau better than me in the mileage dept. that 700r4 will def be a help with that.

My first plan is an HEI of course, and recommendations on what brand to buy??

Next big thing will be a wiring kit for the torque converter lockup on the 700R4. Do you guys really think a Qjet will be more fuel efficient than the 2 barrel?

Q-jets have small primaries so I think it would be better than a 2 barrel just putting around town and even on the highway if you stay out of the secondaries.

Also think 600 is a GREAT deal! Most guys spend that much or more installing a 700R4...

I like the stock look of the engine room. I'm curious about the fan setup. I've got a mostly stock `71 as well that has been in the family for decades. I believe mine has a 5 blade fan, with fan clutch and shroud.

So I'm questioning whether your fan setup is stock, if so, perhaps someone can explain why there is such a difference?

I have had two 71's with the exact same setup as the one pictured here. Does your truck have A/C? If so that may be the difference.

It's had cab corners and rocker panels replaced on both sides, and there are a few minor rust holes underneath the passenger side of the cab. The only other major flaw with the body is the cracking body filler on the passenger fender, which is not the original fender.

Never had AC. It has been upgraded after factory with a hitch, associated wiring, a second battery, and a 4 row radiator. It has the original 350 engine. This fan setup is correct, as I had replaced the fan clutch in a futile attempt to solve a vapor lock problem, which ended up being a failing fuel pump. If the clutch was the wrong setup, how would Autozone have found it?
