imagine how many truck we could all build with that cash.

what exactly was the fix for this problem? my '86 has these two huge plastic covers over the gas tanks. probably abotu 1/4" thick or so plastic. is that it? and what happens if i remove them? the way they are they trap leaves and dirt up in there, and i dont want to have to replace the tanks because of it.

I got a thing to move the gas tanks for a discount of X dollars.
Or get X dollars off a brand new Chevy truck when I trade this one in.
I didnt do either and cant find the paper work now.

My mother owned the truck before me. She bought it used. Who knows how many people have previously owned the truck.
They still sent the paper work to my mother and then me after I registered it.

THAT'S IT! That's what the paper said, it said I could have the gas tank moved for X dollars, or trade in the truck on a new truck and have $1000 off the sticker price.

Yep that sounds about right.
$1000 what a joke.
I think I laughed and threw it in the trash.
Or wait, maybe I wiped my @$$ with it, either way its not around

They never even sent me a certificate. I thought the settlement was pretty lame but to have not gotten the certificate really annoyed me.

My dad got a certificate in the mail a couple of years ago. Since he gave me the truck it was transferred so I used it when I bought a 2001 Sierra C3. It was like a free $500 for me so I wasn't complaining

Here you go MSL...

GM Pays $500M In Pickup Crash Settlements
Fuel Tanks Moved Outside Frame In C/K Models
Posted: 11:34 a.m. EDT May 7, 2003

LOS ANGELES -- General Motors has reportedly paid nearly $500 million to settle hundreds of lawsuits involving deadly pickup truck crashes.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the payouts were made to almost 300 families who filed suit over accidents involving C/K pickups.

The pickups used to be built with fuel tanks mounted outside the frame. Critics said the design left the light trucks vulnerable to explosion in a collision.

Word of the settlements emerged after a federal judge in Montana disclosed some details of a suit filed by the estate of a family killed in a pickup accident. GM had argued against releasing the document, saying it violated confidential agreements with the plaintiffs.

A GM spokesman said the settlements, amounting to at least $495 million through the year 2000, don't mean the pickups are unsafe. Jay Cooney says the C/K "has a tremendous safety record."

I am not sitting on top of a fire ball......

The plastic is there to keep rocks and such from denting the tank. These aren't unsafe. People against them wanted the tanks moved, but the final settlement was to send you a certificate that would get you $1000 off a new GM vehicle. It was transferable and could be sold. You also had to own (have it regiestered in your name) during the lawsuit. If you owned it afterwards, you weren't the current owner. I still have 2 of these in my house. It is stupid.
The main plaintiff was a drunk teenager that was out partying and somehow got stuck or stopped on a railroad track passed out. The stated the fire killed him, but coroners said he died when the locomotive struck his head upon impact while trying to stop blowing the whistle. Of course from the impact of the train directly in the door, it hit the tank and almost split the truck apart, so you know the tank rumptured. And from the sliding and sparks from braking the gas ignited. The truck was about 1 foot wide at the bottom rocker to rocker. The roof was about 2 feet wide...
Unless you plan on passing out on a railroad track, I wouldn't worry about it....

EDIT:
BTW, the lawsuit came out AFTER the run of trucks were over, not during. During the lawsuit, the met all safety standards.

My '86 has the giant plastic covers you are talking about. The covers are so big that I thought I had plastic tanks at first.
