Under bed fuel tank

I'm wanting to relocate the fuel tank under the bed, behind the differential. I have a 60 c-10, all the aftermarket "drop in" kits, show 64-66.
Other than the front end being torsion bars on the earlier models, what's the difference on the rear most portion of the frame? Is there a reason no one makes a kit for the 60-63?
I have measured my frame and compared it to the dimensions of the kits' tanks, everything seems like it would fit.... Maybe some fab work for brackets, straps, ect, which is fine. I just hate to drop that kind of money for a kit, only to find out it just wont work.

Any insight would be helpful, thanks in advance...

the 60-2 frames are a little wider at the rear, you can contact David Boyd and he can make one for your, very nice tank.

That's it exactly...the '63 through '66 frames had a taper rearward, so the distance between the frame rails is narrower.

With the earlier frames being wider, most of the 63-66 gas tank kits or home grown installations are probably going work equally well in the 60-62 chassis with a little extra attention in the attachments.

My perspective on the disappointing lack of aftermarket support for 60-62’s - manufacturers just don’t consider the 3 year span of 60-62 models a big enough market segment to design parts for these trucks. Few even bother to identify existing items that are a direct fit on the earlier chassis.

And there’s probably a sound reason for this. Most of the 63-66 chassis components are the same as the 67-72 providing a 10 year span of potential customers for aftermarket parts.

60-62’s being the first 3 years of production are oldest and likely the fewest surviving, and are generally viewed as less desirable than 63-66’s because most buyers don’t want to deal with the T-Bar chassis and lack of support. Compared to the 63-72 market, this represents far fewer likely sales of aftermarket upgrades.

And there are simply more 67-72’s still running around than all of the earlier models. As a result the 67-72 group is the main revenue target and the 63-66 guys get a free ride because the same stuff happens to fit. Unless the owner of an aftermarket chassis company suddenly becomes a 60-62 enthusiast I don’t think support for our trucks will be improving anytime soon.

I just ordered a fuel tank from 78 to 86 Jeep cj7. The tank measures 25 wide, 18 deep, and 10 7/8 tall to install in the back of my 66. Its a 16 gallon tank and should tuck up in there with only about 3 inches drop down below the rear crossmember I hope. I'll send you over some pics when I get started on it if you want. I tried to find the shortest one (height wise) that I could because I'm not a big fan of hangin 10 inches of gas tank down below the rear bumper.

Heres mine just got done putting it in. mine is a short box, i bought a 78 blazer tank it was to big for the short box frame, it would have worked on a long box. (too bad your not close to me you could have the blazer tank) I ended up using a 20gal flat bottom tank from Brokdickracing.com was $219. with shipping

Do you have any pictures from the frame level on the sides and from the back that show how far down it hangs? Looks like a nice tank.

Thanks for all the info, mine too is a short box, guess I shoulda mentioned that.

I didn't think there was that much difference in the rear section of the frames to the extent that the kits out there wouldn't fit. Without having the tank in front of me to measure it myself, i'd hate to drop that kinda dough, only to find out it ain't gonna work.

I was hoping someone on here ran across this before and could answer this question, or had better ideas all together, which I had found great ideas searching and reading other posts.
I was mainly curious as to why or if the tank kits I've found for the 63-66, wouldn't work in the 60-62s. If we're talking a few inches here, you'd think "they" would make the kit fit all the frames and list them as such, and broaden the market to pick up that many more customers. Especially something simple like a fuel tank!

As for the POL and the BDR tanks, do they come w/ a sending unit? If not what did you guys use.

Oh yeah, planning on running Edelbrock's 1721 Performer RPM mechanical fuel pump (just to match the carb and intake), but I'd consider going electric if it makes mounting the tank any easier.
