Member intro, 1963 GMC K1500 Crew Cab w/351 V6
Hi all,
My name is Rob, and I live in Honolulu Hawaii. I'm 35 and have two daughters, 7 and 2 years old. I bought my first truck, a 1949 Ford F1, when I was 14 and fixed it up over the next year or so. Before I had a license, though, I sold that and got a lowered 1968 C10 Stepside with a little 2-something-6-banger. It’s the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. When I turned 18, I went into the Navy for 5 years and unfortunately sold that truck when I got shipped to Japan. Once I had my first kid, I needed something with 4 doors, and the options just weren't there for an old truck guy like me. But about 18 months ago, my high school best friend (and eventual best man) died very suddenly. I was thrown back into the small town in Washington State where I grew up, and began to reminisce. I began looking for that old stepside and eventually found out that yes, there actually were 4-door trucks made back then. I widened my search for either my old truck or a crew cab which I could fix up and carry my family around. While on the internet searching, I happened to find Tobytuttle’s thread about the crew cab he found. I immediately signed up and sent him a PM stating that I had money at the ready if he wasn’t going to purchase that truck. After some talking online and on the phone, I sent him the money. Tomorrow it will be on a boat headed to Tacoma, where I’ll have someone pick it up and take it to my parents’ for storage. Unfortunately, I will not be able to complete this build in Hawaii. I bought a 64 ½ Mustang convertible here a few years ago, but ended up selling it because I couldn’t find anyone here that knows how to restore (vs. repair) a classic. I don’t have the option of going to my local pick-n-pull, because every car over 15 years old is rusted through. Shipping parts here is ridiculous in terms of money and time. So I’ve decided to leave the truck in Washington State while I gather enough money to send it to someone who can do the truck justice. For that reason, this will probably not have a build thread. However, any pictures I get, I’ll happily upload to the board. The truck seems to be a 1963 GMC K1500 crew cab with a 351 V6. According to the original owner, it was running up until the point it was parked a dozen years ago. My plans are to bring it back to its original glory, and perhaps add some options available to that truck when it was bought new. Finally: Thanks, Toby! You da man! Aloha, Rob |

Truck looks to be in pretty good shape, hope you get to it soon. You need to post some pics on the 60-66gmc website they would love to see this, not to many of these around.

Welcome to the forum! I like your plan, sounds very practical. Nice to see it appears to have all the deluxe window and windshield trim. Hopefully you’ll eventually get to enjoy it in person.

Rob...
Welcome. I sent a post out to Toby yesterday thinkin he bought that CC....All the comments and compliments in that post to you...Congrats. That thing makes me quiver.. I live in northern Oregon and have amassed quite a selection of 60-66 GMC goodies. So....if you run into anything ya need....give me a heads-up. I probably have it....and if not I'd be pleased to help you find it. Again, congratulations on the purchase of one of the best candidates for resto on this site. BTW....I have both a '67 351E in my '63 and a 351C in my 4K series '66. Awesome engines. I completed a couple pretty neat mods on the E motor, including Hydro-Boost and a Rochester Q-Jet...(oh, and swapped the SM420 fer a TH400)....all screamin successes. Look forward to hearing more on this bad-boy. And.....Is that a rear window defogger...?

Welcome to the forum Rob
That is definitely a rare truck. It must be tough not being able to be where the truck is, and able to work on it yourself. If you need any help in finding someone to build this truck let me know. While I'm not in Western Washington, I do know several people in the restoration business.

Re: Member intro, 1963 GMC K1500 Crew Cab w/351 V6
Thanks all! Toby sent me pictures of the truck being loaded today, so I thought I'd put them here. It does look like it has a rear defroster...
I'll have to put the truck away for a few months, but will definately be coming back here when it's time to start the build. I'll be looking for someone on the mainland who can build this truck correctly. Personally, I don't think any truck like this should be a trailer queen, so won't need it to be concourse, but I'll want it to be showroom new when it's done. I especially like the red truck on this thread, and would like my truck to look just as good. Maybe when the time is right, I'll hit up Tony and see if he'll do this build. Otherwise, if anyone has any recommendations on the West Coast, I'd be appreciative. Now Pictures! Aloha, Rob |

I know someone just down the road from me that would take on the job. He would probably even go pic it up at the port and bring it to his shop. I even have a NOS chrome grill and front bumper for that truck if interested. I will email you. WES

Re: Member intro, 1963 GMC K1500 Crew Cab w/351 V6
I knew someone had got it. I stopped in twice a year, every year for the last ten years and always got the dreaded "I'm going to do something with it someday" and thenit was gone...
It would have been a good match for my 74 2WD Blazer. |
