454 engine

my 454 engine blew a head gasket. my mechanic cleaned it all up, and found out the block was cracked in 3 places, thus no good. he pulled the pistons, ect. and said the pistons were 60 over. some friends have said that was to big. what will this do to the life of the engine? pro and cons of 60 over? thanks for the help!

Re: 454 engine

Depends what year block. The older blocks are supposed to have a higher nickle content. 40 and 60 over are standard bores for early big blocks. The only problem I know of with a 60 over 454 is that the cylinder walls start to get thin. The water jackets run between them. The year of the engine is the important thing in my opinion, but others might have more to say on it.

Re: 454 engine

ran .060 454 with 1/4" stroker (496 ci) 14:1 8000 rpm shifts no problem.

I agree the year makes lots of differance here if its much past 75 I would be skeptical.

You can 454 blocks at fair price with little searching. Better bet would be used block bored to .030 or .040,KB pistons your rods and crank.

Biggest question is what are you going to be comfortable with?

Re: 454 engine

454's can go to 080-.100 over without any real problems

that .o60 never never land thing is a smallblock// bigblocks are a very different animal

Agree - 060 on a big block should not make you think twice

Re: 454 engine

As long as things were done "correctly" that is a good deal.
