Re: O/t...my shop buddy got hurt....

As usual...I can relate to that one.
Well, Sir, ol Louie Rocky looks grateful that you told the Vet..."HELL NO I AINT PUTTIN HIM DOWN..."!!!!

I had a big Yellow Lab named Woodie....An he also rear ended a horse....bout the same story as Louie...He was five yrs old, and a great dog when it happened and he lost one eye and dislodged the other retina...leavin him completely blind.
I put him in the ol GMC and took him in to see the vet.
Well, the Vet looked up at me and asked...?...Ya gonna put him down...?
He was pretty messed up.
Well I looked down at Woodie an then looked back at the vet ( with wet eyes, behind my sunglasses)...And I said...No...I don't think so.
The Vet looked relieved....(I think Woodie did too).
We patched him up...He also had a broke lower jaw....so he wore a muzzle...to hold his jaw right....and a big ol cone...and sucked gravy for a month.
He got used to where everything was on our two acres....(unless I left somethin' out)....bumped into very little....and lived the next 11 years "out to pasture" at my house....Pampered...layin in the grass near me..or one of the girls...slept inside on his own real-true-to-life bed...all the time stayin loyal to me.....just like I stayed loyal to him....just like you stayed loyal to Louie Rocky.
I'm cryin again.
He's been gone for four years, ...I burried him under a plum tree out by the barn.

Thanks for takin care of that pup.

Re: O/t...my shop buddy got hurt....

Everybody,

I am sorry.
I got too close to that slippery slope.

Sir.
I love your pup, and I guess I'm pretty close to you too.
Sight unseen.

They say stuff like....Ya really know a person when ya see how he treats his dog.
Or cat.
Or sugar glider.

No.....maybe not the sugar glider.
Unless it gets kicked by yer pony.

Whatever.

Re: O/t...my shop buddy got hurt....

I've had a couple one eyed dogs over the years. They don't seem to have much problem.I've got one laying at my feet that has had cataract surgery, she see's fine,my wallet still hurts. Before the surgery she was pretty much blind but could get around fine in the house except for stairs, her depth perception was off.Outside she would walk the fence since she could see the shadow of it to get back to the porch.

Re: O/t...my shop buddy got hurt....

I have one, with one eye as well. The only thing I did not see mentioned, is that the eye socket still oozes from time to time (2 years later). Just something that no one told me and took me by surprise the first time I noticed it.

Hope the puppy heals quickly. If he doesnt want to take his antibiotics, wrap them up in liverworst

Re: O/t...my shop buddy got hurt....

yep. interesting how close we get to the little fellers. Mine just turned 10, never sick a day in his life until last month. Now he's got some weird disease and his hips are shot, been a very steep slope, but he's got some years left in him.

Good call SIR. Louie looks happy. They don't know they're supposed to have two eyes, so he is probably just thinkin "woof, that $%^&* hurt" - and he'll probably avoid farm animals.

I'm glad I have my own office at work so nobody can see me cryin. My best friend is a white tiger cat named Sonny that is going blind in his left eye, it rips my heart out that there is nothing I can do about it. He doesn't seem to mind though so we soldier on.
Best wishes to you and your buddy! May you both live a long, long time.

Like I shouldn't have..I just read this thread again.
And again, I'm part way tore up.

But, like any great friend...there is the full spectrum of love to consider.

Woodie was the big bodied, heavy bred hunting dog.....a real beautiful droopy skinned, big ol' intelegent head.....an wieghed over a hundred pounds at a year....and as a mature male his 'fightin' weight was 120lbs.
Well that sumb1tch didn't lay around and act like a decent friend much until he was about three. Until then he spent most of his time dry-humpin any thing that moved and causing me pain and aggrivation....and money.
I can't recall right off all of it.....but just to give you an idea, a sample of his various violations would include : Chewing up a complete $400 dollar custom fishing rod, eating a $250 pair of Oakley's, chewing the liner out of a $100 hat, ripping apart the left side of a pair of $285 pair of Danner boots, $4800 worth of fencing to contain him in an effort to protect the neighborhood and limit the damage to my own stuff. He also put me on my back more than once while horse-playin....
And one time my best buddy accidently cut my forehead to the bone.....
One Friday night just before going out on the night, I was saying goodnight to him on the way out.
He was just startin to heal up....it had been a long couple months, but the dog was sure startin to feel alive again, makin him pretty rambunctious.
Well I walked up and scrooched right down in front of him and told him I loved him with a big grin in my voice....happy he looked so good.
Well that big ol feller musta thought I said "Shake"....because he stuck his big old paw out to shake......of course he could'nt see me there...and I was enough off balance so I couldn't respond quick...and he just laid me open from the hair-line to my eyebrow. I bled like there was no tomorrow. He never even knew he touched me.....but I carry the scar to this day....and will.
That night is when my buddies gave him the name.
Among his Peeps, he went by Blind Woodie for the rest of his life.

That's the same group of "buddies" that used to tease me about goin home to "pet Woodie".....or Woodie having a "stiff neck".

Just like we all know....They are critically important to our well being and are a wonderful source of happiness.
And of course, my Wife and I enjoy an unbelievable relationship with our 8 year old 1/2 Lab and half Boxer named "Trevor".....as different as can be but just as remarkable as Woodie.....or before him, Jake....and before him Captain....and Smokey.
And, yes....We're settin ourselves up fer a broken heart again....but niether ourselves or Trevor Kriegler are sorry about it. It's the way it should be.
