how does this look?1984 Chevy Crewcab 1 ton Dually 2WD
this truck is in Michigan 1984 Chevy 1 ton Crew Cab Daully, 454 engine with less then 10,000 miles on rebuild. All new interior, 400 turbo transmission, all new bearings and 355 gears in the rear end for better fuel mileage, tires are all good, power steering, power windows and locks, dual exhaust, daul fuel tanks, goose neck hitch, this truck was Originally From Florida AND HAS NEVER BEEN RUN IN THE SALT. $4500.00 does this sound ok? to high? anything in paticular I should ask ,or look for on this year of a truck? thanks !!

If its rust free in Michigan thats a bargain. rust free in florida its just another chevy. Ask for proof of a rebuild, check the undercarriage rust on the frame hardware and tanks is a give away that it's been near an ocean or in salt. also x2 on the mileage

I find it somewhat high for a 2wd with what might be manual interior but I think location is a huge part around here 4wd are that much but never great condition or maybe its just me lol as far as questions I'm extremely picky on "rebuilds" as I wanna see proof of it all and ask for rust I drove 2.5hrs to see a NON-rusted suburban got there and though it was a joke those 10ft pics are the enemy

"3.55" gears were never available in the 14 bolt full floater or the 9.5" semi-float. Nor, to the best of my knowledge, are available aftermarket. So, that's a problema.
Other than that i think it's an ok price although i have seen dually crew cabs for $2500. This in itself is perplexing---i would think the more truck the more expensive it would be? Why do 1/2 ton shortbeds command the most money? |

my dually ha a dana 60 in it. summit carries a 3.54 gear set. just may have a 60 in it

Since he mentioned the gears for gas mileage, I'd assume he swapped them in there.
3.42's are now made and sold for the 14 bolt floater rearends, but I don't believe they would have been offered from the factory in a vehicle like this that is meant for towing. Would have had 3.73's minimum (mine does). Doesn't sound like much change but if it indeed has 3.42's or even 3.55's as the owner claims (he may have his numbers crossed), it will kill the towing power around town (2.48 first gear in the 400) and those tall tires aren't helping either. Might be okay on the highway towing once you get up to speed. Personally the 3.73's I run I find are a perfect compromise, good acceleration for towing and still goes down the highway at 70 just fine. Just my observation if your goal is to have a nice tow vehicle. |

Not sure what is considered good for some people. I run a 502 crate in my 1 ton with a 400 turbo and 3.73's, I get 12 mpg around town and 14 on the open highway. Not bad (in my opinion) for a 5300 lbs. truck shaped like a brick. Some of the new trucks with overdrive and fuel injection barely do any better.

If its what they say it is and its what you want I dont think its that bad of a deal. Especially here in Michigan. Of course I would try to get it cheaper. I'll pay more any day for a rustfree vehicle. Not to mention the price of fuel.

Look up the NADA value and go from there. (to me it seems high, but I like cheap).
Inspect the sheetmetal. Even in Florida, to close to the coast, can eat vehicles up. From pics and description, almost too clean. I'd also ask "why". Why new engine, interior, bearings? Why the gear change? Changing gears isn't like changing the air cleaner, more like "while we're in there...."

In florida at least 40 miles from the coast anything less can get eaten up. ask where in florida.

You don't see many older vehicles in Florida as the climate in every part of Fl can be as damaging as the salt in northern states. My tools will rust in one day if not brought into an air conditioned shop and wiped with wd40. Check for the obvious rust that Will be there or bondo'd over. I used to have a magnet that I would use to find bondo. Unless that truck has been kept in an air conditioned garage I would not believe NO RUST.

Thats pretty in line with what I paid 2 years ago for my 2wd crew cab dually in Michigan. Mine was a Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan truck on farms for most of its life. The last 10 years before I bought it were spent in a barn. As a result, my truck is relatively rust free for the area.
I would take a close look at the gas tanks and the frame. Try and get him to $3500 or a good compromise due to age, other than that go for it! Nice looking truck. |

I assume you mean single rear wheel and dual rear wheel.
In which case I'd say not necessarily. May depend on the year though, but I've seen many 14 bolt floaters under original dual rear wheel 1 tons. I recently robbed a rear sway bar setup from a dually for my 79 1 ton single, both have 14 bolts in them. |
