How rusty, is too rusty?

Just wondering if I'd be better off finding a better cab, or repairing this one?

Above windshield on both sides

Pass.

Drivers

Pass. Cab corner

Drivers front cab mount

Same

I think my biggest concern is above the windshield, if you guys need more pics I can go outside and take some. Thanks!

Guess it depends on where you are.

Out West, they'd throw that away. In your neck of the wood that's probably considered "relatively rust free"... .LOL

Zero welding skills, I have a buddy that can though. I was thinking cab replacement also, but I'd have to go down south to get one. Don't know if I could ever find a clean 66 gmc cab seems like most are Chevys

if your dash is salvageable, you could just switch it out into a chevy cab....

rust is just like an iceberg.... what you see is only the tip, these all rust from the inside out, so if you have a pinhole and you cut 3 inches around it on all sides, and flip the piece over, your actual damaged/rusted metal could be the size of a quarter- this is just for a visibile pinhole... now imagine what the rest looks like...

My dash is in pretty good shape actually, didn't know that the dash would be the only difference!

Hard to find old trucks for at least for parts here in Louisiana. I have some ruff areas on the cab, but I'll just do what is takes to repair it.

Re: How rusty, is too rusty?

Check my build thread, mine was worse yet... I had no skills at all and it was my first time but it turned out pretty good. It can be done with some time and patients. Give it a try before you throw in the towel on it and find another.....

Re: How rusty, is too rusty?

I say fix it, if you have the capabilities. They're not making them anymore, and they're getting harder and harder to find. In 10-20 more years they'll all be that much rustier, and you'll kick yourself for not fixing what you had back then. If you need some inspiration, look into what the early VW bus guys are digging out and restoring.

I think the one in the link below is one of the worst I've seen resurrected.

Re: How rusty, is too rusty?

Getting skills you don't have is part of re-building cars/trucks. I use to be afraid of painting ...thinking I could do a good enough job, when a buddy showd me how! Started just doing just primer, then inter fenders and frames, then door jams, and then whole vehicals. Painting is pretty easy actually ...prep it the key! ...MIG welding is next for me! Good Luck!

Re: How rusty, is too rusty?

Mine looked about like that, and I was going to fix it. I pulled out the windshield and under the gasket the inner and outer roof panel were rusted through, that changed my mind.

There is a CL ad in my area of a guy with a 1963 GMC cab...Seems overpriced to me, but figured I would pass it along
