Help identifying front suspension parts on a 1970 C10
As the title says I need a little help identifying a few parts on a 1970 C10. I just bought the truck and the previous owner couldn't tell me much. It has had a front disc brake conversion done but not sure which years parts were used. Its not aftermarket. I have to replace the steering gear its worn out but may just replace the entire steering system as well. The outer tie rods for sure.
What I know: -All the ball joints have been recently replaced upper and lower -The brake hard lines run on the rear of the crossmember -The steering gear has this part # 7802644 -The rotors are 1 1/4 in wide -The front brake hoses are too long Any help would be appreciated the front brake hoses are way too long and look like sh!t. I need to fix this. As well the steering column has been shortened by the looks of it. Why would someone do this? I would like to fix this as well.A welded steering shaft doesn't fill me with confidence. I have attached lots of pics. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Re: Help identifying front suspension parts on a 1970 C10
My guess would be 71-72 parts on your original '70 crossmember.
The hoses are the 73-87 version. The only way to know for sure,... is to identify the upper balljoint or the outer tie rod. These 2 parts are specific to either 71-72 or 73-87 spindles. The a-arms are definitely the 63-70 or 71-72 version.

Curious why the 73-87 front brake hose would be used if 71-72 parts were used? Are the brake hoses interchangeble for those years?

But the front components could also be 73-87 parts swapped into the older a-arms. The a-arms and crossemember are era correct,... but with a balljoint change,... they "could" be 73-87 spindles, rotors, and calipers. And I'm with you on swapping out that welded steering column.

About that steering column what would be the best way to fix it? Can I just replace the inner shaft that runs through the column? Its a new 1970 tilt according to the previous owner. Its mystery why they would butcher it but it is what it is.

Anyone know who sells the internal steering shaft for a 1970 chevy tilt steering column?
