freon removal
Is it true that only R12 needs to be, by law, to be evacuated and the 134a does not? I am replacing compressor and was wondering?
If not will a shop evacuate a system?

Re: freon removal
The good ole EPA says NO. But alot of people do it anyway. A shop will be glad to take your freon, Charge you, The resell it to someone else! Talk about a profit margin.
Section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits releasing CFC-12 into the atmosphere. The prohibition on venting CFC-12 has been in effect since 1992. Section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits releasing HFC-134a into the atmosphere. The prohibition on venting HFC-134a has been in effect since November 1995. Can I vent HFC-134a or other refrigerant substitutes? No. Effective November 15, 1995, section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits individuals from knowingly venting substitutes for CFC and HCFC refrigerants during the maintenance, service, repair and disposal of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. A fact sheet explains this prohibition in much more detail. Note: although this prohibition is part of Section 608 (stationary refrigeration and air conditioning equipment), it also applies to Section 609 (motor vehicle air conditioning). |

Re: freon removal
Thanks!
Found a shop that will evacuate my system for $30 so I guess I will do that and have it done. Can anyone tell how many cans of Freon to put back in system? I know there is a label under hood but it will speak in pounds and I am going to use the cans of Freon from auto parts with one dye can or mixture.

Re: freon removal
I replaced everything today after having the system evacuated. Have a question; the only thing left is the orifice tube. The old one came out in pieces it was so tight. The new one is tight also is there an easy way to get the new one in? Do I have to drive it in and is that alright?
How have some of you put in a tight orifice tube? I will draw a vacuum after I get the orifice tube in and charge it up.

Re: freon removal
Got it all back together today and after vacuum tried to charge, it is cool here today around 60 with low humidity , the system would not take the Freon. I got about 15 oz in and the clutch is at least starting to cycle. The hose line past the orifice freezes up when the engine is at 1500 RPM and then quickly un-freezes back at idle.
Is this normal on cool days or do I have a problem I have over looked?
