led dash

i am sure that this has been asked before but i converted my gauges to the white faced ones and i have been told that the tick marks on the dash are what glow at night so my question is what do i need to do to make my gagues glow at night and if i have to put leds in the dash what style 194 do i need to use because there are so many diff choices on superbrightleds.com another question i have is how will my truck react to the led bulbs in the dash because i will also be running led brake lights on the back

Re: led dash

I used red LEDs in my truck. I first took the entire cluster apart and painted over the mint green with gloss white. I installed LEDs that look like the pic below and I got them from eBay. You cannot use the dimmer anymore without additional modification which I didn't bother with....

Re: led dash

Which style seems to work better? The round lighting ones I'm guessing?

Just went through this on my '72 truck. Here's a few part numbers that may help.

For the dash itself, these are the bulbs I ordered from superbrightleds.com :

Qty | Product / Options | Price/ea |
============================================================
3 | 4410-x9: 9 LED Festoon bulb | $ 4.74 |
4410-NW9: Natural White
------------------------------------------------------------
12 | WLED-xHP5: LED T10 Wedge Base Bulb | $ 5.95 |
WLED-WHP5: Natural White

WLED-xHP5 will work in the dash sockets and are 194 style.

4410-x9 was for the dome light (I ordered extras of all bulbs, so the quantities account for a few extras).

On the ac/heater panel, there are two light sockets, but the WLED-xHP5 wouldn't fit there. There's also a light for the parking indicator, which is a very small bulb and finally, the glove box light.

I did not take the dash cluster out. Just laid on my back on the floor board, reached up behind it, unscrewed the sockets and replaced each one at a time. Double check, when putting them in, that they work correctly. Had to switch a few of the bulbs around 180 degrees.

I ordered these (extras in all orders to have on hand, just in case):

Qty | Product / Options | Price/ea |
============================================================
6 | BA9s-x-x-xV: Wide Angle BA9s Bulb | $ 1.98 |
BA9S-W-120-12V: Cool White 120 Degree 12V
------------------------------------------------------------
6 | BA9S-x4-x-xV: 4-LED BA9s Bulb | $ 2.98 |
BA9S-W4-90-12V: Cool White 90 Degree 12V

If I recall correctly, the 120 degree bulbs were used in the ac/heater socket and glovebox light and the 90 degree (only needed one) was used for the parking light indicator.

superbrightleds.com processes orders quick and shipping was a few days, at most. Been very pleased with the upgrade. I like to see at night. Stumped my toes, stepped on crunchy toys (think "Home Alone" movie) and tripped over too many things in the dark.

I took it a step further and picked these up from Amazon:

Amazon.com: LED Convenience Courtesy Light -... Amazon.com: LED Convenience Courtesy Light -...
Two, one for each side of the interior, under the dash pointing towards the floorboards, then wired them into the door jamb wiring so they came on when the doors opened.
