What makes a Custom Cab?

I have had some time to review and search threads and I have to assume that my question is so stupid, nobody else has had to ask it.

Being used to working on VW's, I was surprised that the VIN doesn't decode the trim level of the truck.

Aside from having a strange issue with the VIN on this 64 I just brought home, (the 6th Character is a "H" which according to all the charts was not a valid character in that spot), how can you tell if a truck should have the custom cab trim or not?

What makes a "Custom Cab" a "Custom Cab"?

...so far the only differences that I can tell is chrome trim, etc.

If that's the case, what's included in that package?

What's a good reference to refer to for things like this?

Sorry, in advance, for the newb question.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

This was posted in my build thread when I had some questions about the trim codes my truck had. 1966 trucks had the option code decals inside the glovebox lid, and earlier trucks had build sheets under the seat springs- usually those are long gone.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

Also, the BBW option was separate from the custom cab options. You can see all the options on my '66 were listed on the SPID (service parts identification) decal below.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

That's good info.

Being that there wasn't a build sheet under the seat it doesn't look like I'm going to find a build sheet.

So, what did the custom group / cab consist of?

Chrome cab corner piece, chrome bumper, chrome window molding, etc?

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

I guess to make my question more simple to understand;

If I order the custom cab trim piece that goes on the cab pillar, what else should I order to go with it to complete the "set"?

From your thread, this is what I'm assuming is correct:

Now what about painted bumpers, grille color, two tone cab paint, and the big tow mirrors?
Is there such thing as a custom cab with painted bumpers and tow mirrors?

...or is the chrome bumper and that little sporty mirror shown above also part of the custom cab package?

I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm just really that clueless when it comes to these trucks.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

There were two different groups of options that usually get confused as "custom cab" options, even though they were available sepatately. I think that the small mirrors were standard (not sure if they were available chrome originally- I think they were painted?) and the larger towing mirrors were the optional mirrors. My '66 has "RV JR Mirrors L&R" listed on the SPID as an option.

z61 is the custom cab package which includes aluminum grill, stainless steel windshield trim, custom cab plates, stainless trim on dash knobs, deluxe horn ring, and tutone white door panels.

z62 is the custom comfort package which includes passenger door lock, passenger side sunvisor, driver and passenger armrests, deluxe seat with full depth foam and heavy duty springs, and heavy duty cab insulation including heavy duty undercoating.

v37 is the chrome front and rear bumpers which also included matching chrome hubcaps.

A10 Was the BBW option.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

Awesome. Thanks for your help!

I think I'm also starting to see where the Z71 nomenclature came from on the newer trucks!

Pardon my GM ignorance!

I'll take another look at my interior trim and narrow it down from here.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

"Custom Cab" has to be the all-time most commonly used term that did not really exist. As far as I know, there was no option bearing that name, and no single option got you all the fancy stuff. Frequently, all the "custom" options were ordered together to give the appearance of a complete package, but the side trim for instance was also a separate option unto itself. I have side trim on my truck that came with painted bumpers, grill, and hubcaps. See the illustration above for all the chrome on the teal '63, but yet no side trim. Huh? Look at Aero's post for the factory terminology, and what each separate option got you. It's a little confusing, I know.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

you guys are awesome. Thanks!

I think I got what I needed to know.

I would prefer to not use the chrome, but I like the side molding, and the original aluminum grille.

It looks like I'll be able to do pretty much exactly what I want without it being a mix of different packages.

.....I think.

What do the two letters after the package indicate?

Z61AF
Z62AA
V37BA
etc

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

I bet the two tone door panels look cool with the custom comfort option interior rests.

Does anyone on here actually have the custom comfort vinyl that matches that photo?

Interesting point in the fine print on the teal '63...
You could order the Custom Chrome Option for your four wheel drive.....But unlike the two wheel drive's....you will not be getting any chrome hub caps or a chrome rear bumper...just a chrome front bumper.
So would the option code be the same for either truck...?
And would the cost be the same...?

Thanks again for posting the literature....I flat love reading the details.

Have to be careful here in that GM changed out their style and color of Vinyl every other year and the Nylon cloth for the seat changed as well.

Re: What makes a Custom Cab?

OK, so that brings on another question I have.

What is the correct interior sheet metal paint color?

....for a 64.

2003 Nissan Sunlit Sand, code "EVO" makes a good match to the original fawn and it's easy for paint shops to find the mix formula.. The original paint wasn't glossy; it was more of a satin/matte finish. I've used Spies Hecker basecoat with no clear over it with good results. The paint rep recommended that I reduce it 50% then added 15% hardener for a little sheen and durability, and it turned out great.

This is the correct pattern and material for '64 and '65 with the custom comfort seat option. SMS Auto Fabrics has the materials to recover the seat in this pattern.

That's beautiful...

Love it.

Thanks for the paint code too.

I'll probably copy it with the exception of this wheel:

That is what I read in the documentation. If you wanted the passenger door armrest, that was another accessory.
