After 2 years i'm almost there

I have spent the better part of 2 years searching for a CTS-V. The prices have come down considerably with the economy as it is. And i haven't been able find the color/interior combo i wanted, when i did find one it was usually sold within a day of me calling,1 was sold out from under me, so i had my dealer friend searching, i had alarms on Auto trader, cars.com, all of it.

I decided 3 weeks ago, my 40'th bday is coming up, and i wanted a midlife crisis mobile, so we dug our heels in, i called everyone i knew in the car business, "this is what i want, find it please" i told them.

In 3 weeks we searched, we called on 6 cars that were close or matched the requirement. It had to be 2006 Stealth Grey or 2007 Thunder Grey. Must have ebony interior, 6 speed, nav, etc, etc.

I saved as much $ as i could, I sold off most of my stuff,
ATV which was 5 years old, had 100 miles on it.
95 impala ss, guy is coming today
02 Crown vic (waiting for the title, which is taking for ever)
Bunch of parts
Took some stuff to scrap, still have about 4 loads left.

It all boiled down to Payment, could i get enough of a Downpayment with trade in and such to be in the brackett i could afford, we did all the paperwork hype to see what i could do, and other than the rate was a little high, i got the terms and duration i wanted.

So the search was in high gear, (I'm an impatient guy) 2 days ago i found almost exactly what i wanted.

2006 Cadillac CTS-V
LS2 400hp
6 speed
30U (Stealth Grey)
Ebony interior
Nav
Magnaflow cat back
Tinted windows
Spoiler
Brushed alum dash kit
CIA

Here is the best part.

25,500 original miles.
1 owner (71 years young)

The car is mint, i'm so inlove with it. I talked with the gentleman for an hour, he said he wasn't going to sell it to no kid, it was way to much car for some young punk. He said i was more than fit to own his car even though i was irish. lol
The price was right in the ballpark for that car, i made 2 offers at first. Shot down hard. I called again yesterday, made one finally offer, me begging on phone, and before i stopped talking he said done deal. I'm so stoked!!

What a awesome guy, worked for GM as a tool and die maker for years. Man of his word, just old skool type guy, loving life and enjoying everyminute of it, so at this point my dealer and his dealer are working out the detail and the paperwork.

So at this point plans are We are going down next week by train to pick it up. Its 500 miles away, but i think it will make a nice trip, we are going to try to make it down and back in 20 hours (hence the train, sleepy, sleepy) so i don't miss 2 whole days of work. Just need to find the detail of getting from the train to the dealers. Hopefully he can pick us up from the train station.

Here is the ad photos, can't wait to see it in person. I need to name her now! lol

I hadn't made a thread because I haven't done anything to it. I will post one up tonight (ish), so I don't hijack this one.

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

We left tuesday am at 330, my dealer had a guy going to north NJ on another deal, so it was way to coincidental. The older man that we rode with, liked 66 in a 65 so it was a long ride down, he wanted to drive so we let him, me riding shotgun, my fiance' in the back seat. 7.5 hours later we arrived in Northern NJ.

Dropped him off at the dealer, jumped in the rental car and headed south. After an hour and tons of traffic we got to the owners house, wasn't home. oh boy.

So i called, he was at the dr's with his wife, who has MS, so we waited. 45 minutes. I saw him round the corner (in the car) and he drove right buy us. My fiance' was laughing, she said he is messing with you!

He came back around the corner and parked in the garage, got his wife out of the car, grocerys put away, I went over the car, it was super clean, even under the hood was shiny, then we sat down and chatted. We had to be 40 miles north to drop the car off at the rental place by 3 and it was 215. I didn't even test drive it, put the plate on, signed the paperwork from the dealer and away we went, he was sad to see it go, but i was smiling for ear to ear.
Needless to say we made it to Hertz at 3 on the nose. Dropped the car, and headed to Maine. Got lost twice, traffic in NJ on 1 was horrible, ran the saw mill parkway at 70mph (in traffic holy crap those people are nuts) got out of NY and into CT and it was clear sailing, no traffic.
We reached home at 11:45 pm. We had run all day with 10 minute stops for bathroom and snack breaks. We did 1000 miles, and got 23mpg on the ride home, we are safely home now. Thats alot for a maine boy who only leaves the state once every 3 years.

I have found a few glitches, i have a blown brake light, i got a CEL (po174 lean bank, we think its the MAF, but i'm checking, i ran it pretty hard, so i'm not sure if that caused it) and the drivers window switch sticks, Needed to top off coolant and fluids.

i can say, it is the most fun car i've had to drive. What a ride, and what gadgets. I wish i had saved long ago for one.

Thanks for reading.

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

It doesn't take long to fall in love with them. My first test drive was in my brother in law's 2004 V. When I met my wife, she had just purchased a 2003 CTS (V6). It was a pretty decent car, and she liked it a lot. We went to visit my BIL, who lived in the hills along Mulholland road in LA. After all the pleasantries of meeting the rest of her family for the first time, he asked if I wanted to check out the car. I was absolutely hooked. After nearly 2 years of begging, I got my '05 V in February of 2008. I was originally looking for a black/tan car, but couldn't find one. I don't care for red at all, so I ended up with a silver/black one. I set out to look for one on a Saturday morning, and bought the one I ended up getting by Tuesday. The only down side was that one of the salesmen at the dealership I bought from let someone test drive the car after I spoke up for it, and they were nice enough to sideswipe a curb with it. No body damage except teh right side rocker panel, but the right front and rear suspension were destroyed. They replaced it with all new parts, and I was good to go. There were a couple of other signs that should have kept me from buying that car, but I am too hard headed and had waited too long by that point.

I have had a lot of cars, and the V was definitely one of my favorites. Being a 2006, you have the upgraded rear already, and the 6.0 as well. The exhaust was one of the favorite things I did to my car, and yours already has it. If you didn't already fall in love with it on your ride home, you will soon!

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

I love it now, i have to detint the fron windows, its 2 dark for maine for a sticker. But other than that, i'm going to get some LED tailight bulbs, i might put some headers on it down the road, and definatly a short shifter. But now is just learning how to shift it. lol.

I have an LS1 in a trans am and i can tear through the gears in that car, but this one i'm shifting to quick or to slow and it makes that clunk lol. I'm going to have to put the Z06 clutch in it before to long. lol

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

V's are awesome, and as long as you keep the exhaust stock they draw very little unwanted attention from LEOs. I ditched the high payments and have been driving my GMC for a few years now, and probably will another year or, just so I can get myself a slightly used 12 or 13 CTSV without a huge financed amount... It's tough, but well worth it.

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

It has a really heavy flywheel in it, too. On the shifter, it is a funky, two piece contraption of a shifter. The OEM one has a nylon type bushing inbetween the halves of the stick to keep NVH down. The shifter busings are usually shot; fresh ones make quite a difference.

After reading your post this morning, I had to go searching auto trader again. Not sure whether to say thanks or not.....

Its got some really barking Magnaflows. I'm lucky, been a fireman for 20 years, so i know almost all the LEO's.

i found the car, it was more than i wanted to pay by 4 grand, but with 25k miles on it and being mint, i decided i was stupid not to go for it. I sold 2 cars, traded my 06 polaris ATV with 100 miles on it, and some saved up cash.

I spread it out for more than i wanted ( i know, thats a cardinal sin), the rate was 5.75 but i got my payment to a point where i can be more than comfortable with it each month. And i will most likely double pay some months to pay it off sooner do i don't give so much interst to the bank

I was surprised they let used cars go that long, but the loan officer said that if they didnt, they would be broke, people today just can afford a good used car on 36 month payments. I guess i can understand that, not alot of us can swing $500 a month for a car payment.

Someone told me to look at the Z06 flywheel, and the new hurst shifter.
This only has 25k miles on it, so i can't imagine my bushings are gone yet.

And your welcome!

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

Paying a bit more for a car with that background is almost always worth it. I've seen more than a couple friends with big headaches because "this used car was a steal" - usually with LS1 Fbodys that have had the guts wrung out of em. lol.

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

Thought i'd update this thread.
Car is AWESOME!! We've put about 2000 miles on it. Love it!

I've found out (any CTSV owners will atest to this) The rear diff bushing is a problam, so this winter I'm going to change the rear bushing, both driveshaft couplers, tranny mount, and the motor mounts. Also some new tires, the originals have lasted awhile longer than expected. Will also get a short throw shifter.
Seems like alot for a car with 28k original miles on it. But it needs them.
I'll post up pics when i can.

Re: After 2 years i'm almost there

Congrats on the pickup! They are a blast, I have a '05. For the clunking check out creative steel rear diff setup. Worth every penny, eliminates all clunking. For what it's worth be careful on those second gear pulls as I have blown 1 diff, it is the weak point of this car but the creative steel kit will help tremendously. I have a B&M short throw and love it.
