Backspacing?

What backspacing do I need to run on 18" wheels with a 4/6 drop on a 1970 truck. I want to run 8.5" wide on front and 10" wide on rear. It has the narrow rear end. Thanks

Re: Backspacing?

It all depends on how close you want that rear tire to the fender in the rear and what size tire you want to run and how low your truck is. But generally, a 4.75" BS will work on a 10" wheel in the rear, and a 5-5.25"" up front using a 8.5" wheel.

Let me know if I can help you out on wheels and get you good pricing on a set. What wheels did you have in mind?

Re: Backspacing?

I forgot to add that I have a disc brake front end. I am looking at the Foose Nitrous wheels. I am trying to find this out because I need to know if I should have my axles redrilled for 4.75" or 5" bolt pattern. With the 4.75" pattern I can get 4.5" or 6" backspacing for the front and 5.25" or 7" backspacing for the rear. On the 5" pattern I can only get 4.5" backspacing for the front and 4.5" backspacing for the rear.

Skip the Foose wheels.
In my opinion those backspace numbers are wrong for your truck.
Besides redrilling the pattern,... the center hub of the rear axles would have to be machined down.
Stick to the truck pattern (5x5).

This truck has 20x8.5 wheels with 5.5" BS up front.
20x10 with 4.75" BS in the rear.

Re: Backspacing?

The rim will fit no question about it, but what tire are planning on running??? That will be your limiting factor.

Re: Backspacing?

As wide as I can on the rear. Nothing to wide on the front, just normal width

Re: Backspacing?

Yes, the backspacing on the Foose wheels in incorrect for your truck. Your truck, since it has the narrower rear end, will need that 4.75" rear spacing on a 10" wheel.

You can definitely fit a 10" wheel, it is just a matter of getting the right backspace, whether it be a off the shelf wheel that is one piece or a custom made wheel. You can get the Nitrous with custom backspace, but it is with a cast center. See below for link.

There are other wheels out there that are custom made and affordable..... considering they are custom made. But if you like the Nitrous, which is a nice wheel, it can be done in a cast center and custom backspace. The Raceline is a forged center, while the Nitrous and US Mag linked is a cast center.

Raceline
Foose Nitrous
US Mag

Street3285 -- are the prices on your site what you're offering on the forum / member prices? I don't mean to hijack, but I am also in the market for a set of 20" wheels. PM if you'd like.

Re: Backspacing?

What about the backspacing on a 18x10 for a 71-72 rear end?

Re: Backspacing?

What about coys wheels. Do they have the right backspacing? They don't have a 18x10 wheel but they do have a 18x9.5 wheel.

Re: Backspacing?

Yep -- you'd want the 5" BS with a 18x9.5 Guys usually run 20x10 with 5.5"BS on a fleetside with the later rear end housing. .. so you're just dropping off the extra .5" width from the back side of the wheel. The wheel / tire would still sit in the same place on the outer edge as 20x10 setup. If you want a fatter tire (?) -- more sidewall -- you might want to consider the 5.5" BS to push the wheel under the truck a little more. It would 'tuck' under the truck more. Depends on your preference and how wide of a tire you want to run... but you'll loose that 'lip' on the outside of the wheel that everyone is after. The wheel would look more narrow from the outside, just looking at the truck. But we're only talking about .5".

Re: Backspacing?

I wish I could remember my back spacing. It doesn't really bother me now cause I can rotate all 4 tires this way with the spacer. And bagged the tires wear in crazy ways on the front. But 4 way 18X10 has worked great for me.
Plus I keep a big set of M/T's (15X13) ready incase of a challange.

Re: Backspacing?

I called coys and they said they would use a 265-50-18 tire on the front and a
295-45-18 tire on the rear. does anybody have any pictures with this tire combo? Is this the widest tire you can fit under a fleet side bed?

Re: Backspacing?

Tell you what. I have a Percy's Wheelrite I'll let you borrow if you want to measure it to be sure you're buying what you want, and what will fit.

http://www.percyshp.com/WheelRite.html

They sell these at Summit. I would seriously suggest one. It is about $75, but it's cheaper than buying tires you can't use.

You pay shipping, and send it back and I'll let you borrow mine, .. or just take that $20 or so and buy one of these. You won't regret it. You sound like you want the MAX tire you can get by with.. right? This will definitely show you. Rim, tire, overall, AND it will make sure the fronts don't rub all the way lock to lock.

This is the best thing you could do to make it really right the first time. It might save you a huge mistake, especially with custom backspacing on your wheels.

Re: Backspacing?

If you choose the 18x9.5 coy no matter what bs you choose your lip will not change!!! Coys wheels just trim the hub to fit your backspace!!! You will not gain any lip or loose any lip....

Re: Backspacing?

So which will work better the 5 or 5.5 backspacing. What about the front on a
8" wheel? I am just trying to figure out the widest tires I can fit on the rear without any mods to the bed.

Re: Backspacing?

On the rear, I would go with the 5" backspacing between the two choices.
