I can tell you in my opinion what it's called, a mistake. I have never heard any good results using any type of tank liner. A new gas tank is the ticket if you're having problems with the one(s) you have. JMO

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

I've had good success with the Bill Hirsch gas tank sealer in my '65 GTO.

In that case I wanted to save the original tank, because originality is important on that car.

So far so good; it's probably been four or five years with no issues.

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

i havent dropped mine to clean it yet. dont even know what the inside looks like yet. i did blow compressed air into the return hose of my tank and the gas that came out had a pink hugh. i am hoping that was staybul or marvel mystery oil. gonna drop it tonight and dump out the gas and see what strains out through an old t shirt from inside. i will decide what to do from there. i have had it 2 months and the PO had it 7 minths so its been setting without running for less than a year. in fact the tag and inspection sticker just expired in march of this year so i hope i am good with dumping the old gas out, using some hot soapy water and maybe some acitone and it be all good to replace and ready to fill.

www.eastwood.com

They sell a product that will coat the inside of a fuel tank. I've used it in the past. Good stuff.

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

I would never use it, I have had it several times in the past and poor results. I am in a pretty heavy 'car guy' circle and all the guys feel the same about the coating. If you want to clean a tank out I have done several methods with excellent success. Use diesel or equivilent solvent, throw in a light chain and have you and a buddy shake the life out of the tank. A few of these and the debris is gone. On smaller tanks I have attached them to a cement mixer with the chain and solvent, cleans it up sweet. You might plug a filter or 2 but after that all is good.

The gas is not that old. Just drain and fill it.

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

Most radiator shops have products they use to seal the inside of fuel tanks. The shop building my truck (WFO Concepts) uses this on all of their vehicles & have never had any issues. They built me a 40-gallon tank out of steel & it's coated with the product. Can ask them the name or get with your closest radiator shop to check on it. If you're going to go with a product like this, it'd probably be best to have professionally installed just to limit any issues down the road imo.

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

There is a product in the biker circles......KREEM......used for coating hand built sheet metal tanks.

There are a lot of similar products out there too from companies like Eastwood......but I have personally used the KREEM and can testify that it is a major pain in the ass but it works REALLY well.

Just remember to follow the instructions exactly.......and keep turning the tank!

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

much easier, and usually cheaper to just have a radiator shop do it. they can hot tank it, then put the liner in if needed. I have a custom built tank on my truck thats lined. no problems. they charged 60-70 to line it. not worth my time when it costs almost that much for the product.

Re: whats it called?? the coating you use inside gas tanks

thanks guys,
i got really lucky. i dropped the tank and the PO must have has the tank cleaned recantly. i pored the 2 to 2 1/2 gallons of gas that was left in the tank through a old tshirt tapped around a 5 gallon bucket. there was only about 4 or 5 little peices of trash. i would sware it was like an old leaf that had parts fall in it. it wasnt matalic in any way. the fuel was also a really pink almost red hugh to it. i am guessing staybill or marvel mystery oil. i washed it with hot water and dawn dishwashing liquid and about 2 cups of purple power. and dumpped it in the same manner and it was clean coming out. i was tickled to get so lucky with a 27 year old truck. i am also assuming its a replacement tank. i blew out the main and return lines and tooj my pressure washer and shot hot water and purple power through the hard lines. all was good there too. i am gonna do one final cleaning with some denatured alcohal i think any suggestions on what to do my final ?
