Prepping metal.

I use to work at a body shop as a prepper. One of the body men there was so ocd he would wipe the metal down with wax and grease remover before he would even work on it then again before he welded on it.We never had to worry about fisheyes on any thing that came fom him lol.He said this step was very important on frames and any thing structual. He was the only body man that did it.Do guys do this or is this step is a waste of time?

Sounds pretty viable to me all paint is 80% prep work

Re: Prepping metal.

Cleaning the body before doing sanding or body work will keep you from sanding trash into the body.

Every body man (worth anything) I know does it.

Re: Prepping metal.

Thanks for response guys. From the prepping and paint side we realy liked it.But im just wondering if some one welded up something that didnt matter paint wise if this step can be skipped?Im sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but it caused a heated debate one day at the body shop over the structual strength of the weld.

The 3 C's of a good welding no matter where it is or what its for are Clean, Clean and Clean the metal and filler.
