Transfer case brace

So, I've heard a few people who remove the brace that ties the transfer case to the frame rail because it can cause breakage. I'm still planning to run this T221 case and wondered what opinions you all have about this.

Re: Transfer case brace

Definitely run it without a brace to the frame.

Re: Transfer case brace

leave the brace off. I've never experienced it but the common opinion/experience is that bolting the t-case to the frame leads to cracked adapters. The x-member will support the t-case/trans combo just fine.

Re: Transfer case brace

I run a SM465 w/NP205 tied to the frame for 19years and never had a problem...probly the autos that all you all are refering to as cracking?
I've never heard of that mount being a cause for an adapter to crack..got to be other peices to the reason why it cracked..to me anyway...

Re: Transfer case brace

I'd like to hear some more on this... I just realized i never put my brace back on, and was getting ready to do so. I tend to think that its there for a reason, but maybe it does cause breakage?? I have a SM465/NP205

I would get the poly and mount it
There is no way in my mind that mount will cause breakage. I have been wheenling the **** outa my rig sence 1993 with that mount tied to the frame..Zero issues and I wheel were stock rigs can't go

Re: Transfer case brace

I've owned several with the side mount, both standards & auto's and never had an adapter crack. Not saying it doesn't happen, but not sure the side mount would be the cause ?

Re: Transfer case brace

Maybe mounted solid it could contribute to breakage, but the stock units are mounted with rubber bushings. At least the one on my 67 is.

Re: Transfer case brace

Most all my 4x4s of this era that I've owned have had the transfer case brace intact and I never had any problems until recently I cracked an adapter shortly after repalcing the old worn rubber side donuts with Energy Suspention poly ones. I can easily see how this can cause problems such as cracked adapters or tailhousings...all motors wil have some torque movement under normal conditions...add low gears, bigger tires, hopped up motors and its amplified..or even worse broken or weak motor mounts. The problem is when the motor has movement and the transfer case doesnt..maybe had I replaced the trans mount with poly also my adapter might have survived. I'm now a believer in using the regular stock style rubber trans and Tcase cushions..there needs to be some movement back there unless maybe your using poly or solid motor mounts or even a limiting strap.

Re: Transfer case brace

Blazerman, that makes perfect sense. I think I'm just going to go with the rubber bushings and throw 'er back on.

Thanks all for the input!!!

Are you running all poly bushings as well as solid motor mounts?

Do you know if you can get motor mounts from energy suspension? I've got the trans/t-case mounts in poly, but not the motor mounts. Didn't really ever research if anyone made them. I would like to replace my t-case side mount bushings with new ones, as the original rubber ones are 40+ yrs old, and are pretty much worn out.
