1973 Super Beetle

As some of you know I had to sell all (ok both) of my trucks to move out to SC. Well now that I'm here I needed something to play with. So with the blessing of my wife (because it's cute) I got an old vw beetle now.

I was able to push start it and drive it home, after replacing the inner tie rod ends, but it has some sort of ignition problem I'm trying to sort out. I don't have pictures to show right now. I'm using my phone for internet and it's kind hard to do that kinda thing with it for me. I will post pix as soon as I can though.


Also if there is anyone in the upstate sc area that knows a thing or two about these old things hit me up. I can use all the help I can get right now.

Thanks guys! Speaking of V Dub; when I was cleaning out the car I found some of those chrome letters from auto zone that spelt 'v dub' lol

I'm really looking forward to getting to drive this thing!

I'm going to have to find some way to get better pix of this thing to.

Vw bugs are cool! I was really into them for years. What is your ignition issue? Based on the pics it a wiring problem. Check the vacuum advance on the dizzy. Bugs are famous for vacuum leaks but real simple to find/fix. Change cap/rotor/points above all make sure the firing order is correct because you can switch( if memory serves)1&3 and it will run but not rev. Great little cars, have fun with it. Cheers, Pat

Where in Upstate SC are you? I'm in Anderson/Belton and have a few Bugs. The '64 in the pic below is my daily driver, but it's apart right now to fix a cam bearing.

In the Greenville area there's a pretty large bug crowd. They come to a lot of the small local shows.

I'm in Boiling Springs. We've been here for about 2 months now. I actually bought the bug in Anderson. It was a hellofa drive back. I had to replace the inner tie rod ends in dude's driveway. That kinda sucked!

That's good to know. Thanks! I'm still on the look out for a local club or something, and I'm trying to find info on local shows and upcoming events.


I guess I've made some progress on the bug. I ran the vin on the title and the title's vin said it's a 73 square back. So I looked in the door jam and that vin said it's a 74 standard. So when I ordered all my parts for my brakes I ordered for a standard. Turns out it is a super but it's a 74. That's alright by me. I guess it was a kind of one of a kind year for the beetles seeing how the bumpers were actually some kinda bumper. The mounts are suppose to be shocks.

Shortly after I had it running I decided to drive a few hours out to TN to see a bunch of friends of mine. I didn't want to take any kind of long way so I decided to take smokey mountain national high way. turns out there are a lot of turns going down that road, and the posted speed limit for a good hour and a half is about 25 mph. I had some upset sports car drivers ridding my behind for a good few miles I made it out alive and found out later that that road is more commonly known as 'the dragon.'

My drive back though I found myself vapor locked on the side of the high way for a few hours. I guess I didn't have everything worked out on it. I eventually made it home safe and sound 4 hours later than I had originally anticipated. Never the less I had a good weekend.

Not to long ago I went out to a localish VW mechanic (he's in Enree for the local folk) and on the way to his shop my drivers rear wheel fell off and I watched it bounce past me into the woods. Not much damage was done to the body, well nothing that won't pound out. I ended up having to buy a new brake drum, wheel nut and hub cap from the guy. But he's really cool and very knowledgeable with the VWs. Turned out the back wheel nuts should be torqued down to about 250lbs. I didn't know that; I had it just wrench tight. Douhhh!!!! I won't do that again.

Right now I'm slowly working things out on it. I've decided how I want to paint it. So for now she's just driving me around.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot. On my drive back from TN I thought of a name for her; Clair. I thought it to be fitting since she is an air cooled engine.

I'm gonna have to take some more/better pictures of her some time soon.
