stepside engine suggestions

Hey guys, my 86 2wd stepside 4.3 with a sm465 finally blew the motor after 312,000 miles. Safe to say I think I got my money worth out of the truck. LOL. I have a low mileage rebuilt oldsmobile 455 with a mild cam sitting in my garage, should I put that in her with the sm465 and with the money to buy a crate engine and rebuild the rearend with some gears and a posi or buy a crate motor 350, or ls engine. Let me hear ur thought's or suggestions.

Re: stepside engine suggestions

I would do a 350 crate engine and a 700r4 automatic. These trucks came with them so finding parts for the swap at a wrecker would be plentiful..

What do you use the truck for? A small block and keep the 465 would probably be the most cost effective route.

I'm not sure how much fab work it would take to stuff the 455 in there, but I'm sure it would take a decent amount of money and work. I'm gonna have to vote sbc.

Go with the Olds 455, tons of torque, and some 86's came with Oldsmobile diesel engines, so you can get motor mounts etc. cheaply. pretty much a straight forward swap, but you'll also need a BOP(buick, olds, pontiac)Bell housing because the bell housings are different than Chevy I am doing this same swap on my 86 SWB silverado to replace the blown 305. Go check out the Olds FAQ at http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/oldsfaq.htm if you are interested in these great engines.

kind regards,
