Rear end question...

I have a '67 3/4 ton w/ an Eaton rear end. Supposedly has 5.13 gears. Anyways, on occasion, when taking off from a stop, I get a LOUD banging noise from the rear, and the rear end lifts like it ran something over. Anyone have this same experience? Hope I'm explaining this right.

Re: Rear end question...

I forgot a few details. It's a no-slip diff, 4 sp. granny. U-joints are good. Center support is shot.

Re: Rear end question...

just trying to wrap my brain around it, for the rear end to be "lifting it" something inside it binds or jams up and the engine torque twist the thing to cause the lift feel but always lets lose???

Re: Rear end question...

Exactly. Feels like it happens on the driver's side only too. Bangs first, then the "lift".

Re: Rear end question...

It could be an issue with the Detroit Locker, or it could be your driveshaft jumping around since you say the carrier bearing is shot. The Detroit Lockers are known for being noisy, but the jumping part isn't good. If it were me, I would be looking into switching to either a 10.5 14 bolt, or a Dana 60 with some better gears, and better parts availability.
