Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

I'm replacing all the hoses under the hood, and while doing so I realized the previous owner who installed the brake booster installed the hoses in a way I haven't seen before

I searched the forums to see how others installed it, and it seems everyone just runs a hose from the intake straight to the brake booster.

However, in the photo attached, you can see the previous owner ran a hose from the intake, to a T fitting, where it splits off into the valve cover, and the the brake booster.

Would this cause a vacuum leak? I'm a little confused here.

The brakes do work great, so it doesn't seem to effect my ability to stop. However I have a hesitation/stumble I've been trying to track down when I hit the throttle hard. I'm wondering if this could be the cause.

I never thought twice about this setup or even noticed it until today.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

The way the vacuum hoses are routed does not necessarily mean it will leak...it sounds like it's working fine to operate the brake booster. Personally, I would use the manifold vacuum just for the booster, and then the vacuum port at the carb for the PCV at the valve cover.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

The inline had a vacuum manifold that screwed into the same place as the fitting you have on there now. You could go to an autoparts store that has brass fitting and create your own.

Milton Air Products
Look at the manifold 683-5 or 683-6 and get yourself some other fittings to complete the different sizes you'll need.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

The vacuum port at the carb normally works the vacuum advance on the distributor on the 230

That's more or less how mine is done.

It appears the vacuum line for the advance is connected at the carb in the photo...note the hard vacuum line at the passenger side of the carb. The larger port on the driver side of the carb is what I would use for the PCV connection.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

Yes, the vacuum advance is connected to a hard line which is connected to the carb on the passenger side of the carburetor

The PCV connection to the valve cover is not needed correct? It's more of an 'emissions' thing from what I understand, to recirculate crank case gasses back into the intake.

I plan on running a hose from the port on the intake straight to the brake booster, and then inserting a breather into the back of the valve cover where the hose runs now.

If nothing else, it eliminates one more ugly hose in the engine compartment. Plus I'm not 100% confident that hose connecting to the valve cover is sealed tightly and might be causing a small vacuum leak.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

There's a lot of evidentiary benefits for running a PCV valve to the carb vacuum port. Here is my friend's L6...the vintage Offy valve cover was originally cast with only a filler hole, and he thought about just running a breather. I machined the PCV port at the back of the valve cover and he has no leaks or blow by.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

But is the vacuum port on the 1bbl going to be enough to support the vacuum advance and the PCV on the stock 230?

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

That's what those two different vacuum ports on the carb are for; one for the vacuum advance signal, and the other for the PCV valve.

Re: Brake Booster Hose Question on an Inline 6

My rochester model B 1bbl only has one vacuum port on the front.
