Hello all. Been lurking here for a few months and decided it was high time to start posting up. I've been a GM guy my whole life and figured it’s a good time for me to own a vehicle from my birth year – ‘69. It was a great year for GM and there are several good options, especially the Camaro, but a truck makes the most sense for life in Alaska. Plus, it’s considerably more affordable than a muscle car of similar condition. I’m looking forward to borrowing knowledge from you all!

No pics yet - I'm still on the hunt for the right one! Looking for a good 4x4 in the ConUS. Something in nice enough condition that I can drive to Bellingham and put on the Alaska Ferry. It should make for quite the road trip this summer. I'm always up for a good adventure!

not sure where you are looking, but there are some great sites out there, I searched for months until I found mine in Wisconsin. Try the following:
oldride.com
autotraderclassics.com
carsforsale.com (found mine here, only place they listed it, lucky me)
there are others, but these have great search engines

P.S. 69's are great (no matter what you tink I am trying to say), but gotta love the 60-66's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent! Thanks for the advice and recommended sites. I’m good at eBay and also really like allofcraigs.com, but you listed some sites that I hadn’t checked yet. It cracks me up how when I search for trucks El Camino’s pop up – I’ve always considered them cars.

The only way I can make this purchase happen is to sell it to my family as a birth year purchase, so I’m limited to 69’s. I wish I was born in the mid fifties because that was the peak in auto styling in my opinion. I love the Bel Air’s and Caddy’s and pick-ups and panels from that time period.

P.S. I’d like to get “69” on my license plate but the DMV website says it’s not available because it might be objectionable to some people. Silly people. We’ll see about that.

Sounds discriminatory to me, poor old number 69, no respect!!!

You will also find that some results on your searches will take you to other sites who sell classic cars, like sparky's machines, and several others. Take your time and find one that is unspoiled. The 70's and 80's were a bad period for people butchering these classics.

UPDATE:

Victory! Got the truck and the license plate! Searched Craigslist nationwide using allofcraigs.com (now called adhuntr.com) and found my truck in Lenoir, NC. Bought it sight unseen, flew there, hung out with the owner, attended a cruise-in in Taylorsville, changed the oil, drove 3,100 trouble free miles to Bellingham, WA, and put her on a ferry to Alaska.

The truck is a K10, SWB, Fleetside, CST, with PS, PB, Three on the tree, tach, factory air, and a working original AM/FM radio. It’s not numbers matching but it’s a great driver. It’s got a 305 from the 80’s with a bit of a cam, an awesome SM 330 HD trans, of course an NP205, 3.08 gears, and front discs. It works out to be a great set-up for a driver (but probably not great gearing for a work truck). She was purring right along at 65 mph and averaged a surprising 16.24 mpg (GPS confirmed). What a fun trip it was – it doesn’t get any better than a cross-country drive in a birth year truck. I’m getting her dialed in this winter and I plan to sell my newer truck in the spring and make this my daily driver.

It’s been really handy having this site to learn from and collect a few parts along the way. Thank you all!

Indeed, thanks Liz. Beautiful place that NC is. I loved the rolling country roads. Reminded me of that John Denver song. WV must be similar. Good people in NC too. The seller let me stay at his place and introduced me to the locals. In an unrelated note I love that show Moonshiners. In hindsight I should have posted the trip and tried to meet some members along the way. The only problem was time. To make the last ferry of the year I had to average 2.5 states a day and that didn’t leave much time for anything but gas, food and sleep. I may be back in NC this summer. I have an open invite to visit anytime form the seller! Pretty cool.

No I live in Fairbanks. Been wanting to make it to some show and shines in anchorage.

Man, I was way off. I like it up there. I made the drive last March and it was the perfect time of year - no traffic. Of course at current gas prices it's actually cheaper to fly. If you come to the Show ans Shine let me know and I'll keep an eye out for you!

No problem. I will. It seems that during the last 2 summers my work schedule has been absolutely crazy. I didn't even fire up my 68. So the way things are looking it might be the same this summer.
