Trans Leak Question

My 700r4 transmission is leaking pretty badly from somewhere near the bellhousing/stall converter. I thought I blew a gasket or seal in my trans but I'm looking for what exactly it could be so I can price out fixing it. Help

Re: Trans Leak Question

Is it something I can do with a little research or should I be calling the trans shop?

You will have to split the transmission from the engine enough to pull your torque converter out. Unbolt your trans from the engine, unbolt your converter from the flywheel, likely have to unfasten the trans lines, unfasten the trans mounts.

Once all that is done it is not a huge issue to change the seal... Basically pulling the seal and installing the new one.

One question, how bad is it leaking? If it is just a small leak try some Lucas transmission sealer. I have seen it work on small leaks before and it is a lot easier to pour in then change the seal...

Hope that helps.

Re: Trans Leak Question

It could be leaking from a number of places:

- torque convertor to pump seal
- pump to case gasket
- pump to case O-ring
- any of the bolts that hold the pump to the case; each bolt has a gasket

Lightbulb Re: Trans Leak Question

If you have to disconnect everything just to access the front seal it's like open heart surgery, instead of chasing a bad seal pull the whole unit and take it to a shop. Do it once and do it right, get a warranty and don't worry about other problems with it down the road.

Transmissions are complex precision units, think of losing fluid like you were losing blood. Yes it's expensive to have it overhauled/rebuilt, but ask yourself if you want to go through this again later?

It's up to you. My experience taught me if you have to pull it get it overhauled so you won't have to do it twice.
