Friend of mine just got a 70 and had the engine all redone. He sent the bezel home with me to clean up and paint up the needles. Is there an easy way to reset the odometer back to 0 for him?I tried taking one apart before but it started to get alittle complicated. Anyone have a step by step.

I think someone was saying something about using a drill to wind it over.

I took mine apart and pulled the gears out a little then you have to wind the firs one and keep going it take sabout five min to get it set to 0. i is a pain in the but with a drill it takes to long inless you have a high speed drill then you can only do 100 mph think about it. lol

Yes on the drill...............

Use a end off an old speedo cable in a drill set in a stand and run it in the shortest direction either forward or backwards which ever is closer.

Don't try to do it on a fast setting....use a slower speed...........it will take a while to do...............

It can be done..I did it a few years ago.. havent done one in a while... I remember a white plastic piece that has a few holes in it that sets the numbers... you kinda pry them back and rotate the dials... pretty much you looking at it and setting it too 555555 on your viewable working side and it shows the 000000 on the side that viewable when in the dash. This plastic tabs break off easy though on this old stuff. I had spare speedoheads to play with.

Shannon. I guess I'm lucky with mine. It's at just over a 100,000 or just under (can't remember - it's been on a shelf for a year and a half) so it won't take long with the drill. And yeah, I know I should have a lot more work done on my project (your box in particular), but I'm getting older and I don't always get as motivated as I should. Been getting more things done just lately however. If you ever get in the area try calling again.

If you're only taking off a few thousand, the drill method is OK, but just think about it......at 100 miles per hour, that's 2,400 miles per day, 10 days to take off 24,000 miles, 20 days for 48,000...etc......Zoomy

what i did with my truck was i just drove it till it got to 0[300000] then drove it into the garage and took it apart and put it back together

I just bought a Craftsman "spin saw", sort of an all-purpose drill/router, even has a remote cable attachment for dremel work. The chuck for the cable is square just like a speedo cable. This unit spins at 30,000 rpm. That would set the odometer in no time. Just gotta know when to stop,

I just went out to my shop and checked. It read 00716. Everything else is new so it won't take long to reset to 0 where it will be realistic.

I hooked up a drill to one once and it only went 45 MPH. I said screw it...not worth waiting 27 months to roll over.
I have broken plenty of them trying to get them over to 0

With that low mileage, you can probably do it in a day.

Had one set at about 60-70 mph and it worked good................

I don't know about US laws, but up here it's illegal to tamper with an odometer for the purpose of increasing the percieved value of the car.....I would be kinda pissed if I bought a car/truck and found out that somebody had been screwin around with stuff like that. Just my $.02 though

in the USA, most states "deem" a truck our ages as "Exempt" either by the age fo the vehicle or the fact that it has rolled over once and exceeds the mechanical limits of the odometer.

Most of us roll these back to zero after completing their trucks to keep track of how many miles since complete (motor, trans body etc)

Thanks for the input guys. I was hoping there was a way to do it short of drilling. Was kind of thinking there must be a clip or 2 that would release the wheels.As far as the legality of the process I can swap out bezels in about ten minutes so I would never go by the odometer as far as value without other documentation.If that was the case I have a couple of 71 and 72"s with about 11,000 miles or even 4,295. My friend just wanted to be able to know miles since rebuild.

By law you are required to either have the new speedo set to your current showing miles, or place a sticker i the door jamb stateing the date and mileage when the speedo was replaced.
I agree though, even if the speedo is original, you never know what digit to put in front of the reading...1xx,xxx...2xx,xxx...6xx,xxx
