8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Does anyone know if this exists for an 8 lug (c20) - http://www.performanceonline.com/196...ION-KIT-5-LUG/

It looks like it's just a bracket that mounts to the existing knuckle/spindle. I found some place that can make them - http://www.blackbirdscustomtrucks.com/- but I would need to send my knuckle and such to them for them work off of (and then the cost is likely higher and I'd might as well just get donor parts from the junkyard (spindle, tie rods ball joints...etc form a 73-87) and do the swap that way).

Thoughts or ideas (I've checked threads here and of course been googling away, so figured someone must have come across this if it exists).

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I'm about to do the exact same thing to my 65 C20 this weekend.... assuming I can get the parts locally anyway.

In regards to the setup on ebay - will that work okay with the stock pitman arm and idler arm? I thought they needed to be changed over to the later model truck as well.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Better jump on that deal i paid well over $900.00 for my kit from cpp!! But seeing that is on ebay i bet it will go for about 400 to 500 before the auction is over.

Well not sure he wants to ship, but even if he does, it won't be cheap.

What I was looking for was basically something that "mounts to your original spindle" which is what the POL kit does. I know the other 87 lug kits are there and I know I can get a donor 73-87 and pull things off. Just wondering anyone came across bolt on brackets.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

400-500 is still better than 900-1100

If I had to do it all over again, I would go get a 71 3/4 ton complete front cross member spindle top spindle with disk brakes and redo it and bolt it in, you only have to re drill two holes, you can find them on craigs list every once in a while.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I wouldn't even bother messing around trying to put discs on drum spindles. I see absolutely nothing to gain when it is so easy to just switch to the '71-'87 C20 spindles, rotors, calipers, etc. The only thing I have not confirmed yet, is whether or not the '63-'66 C20 lower control arms will accept the '71-'87 C20 lower ball joints. I am pretty sure they will fit, but I just have not confirmed it.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I have been thinking about doing this on a 69 3/4 ton Chev. If you change to the 71 to87 3/4 ton balljoints then you ca use the spindle from 71 to 87. You will have to do somthing about the tierods, but if you use the relayrod and tierods from the donor vehicle all you need then is master cylinder and brake hoses. You can either reroute your front brake lines or leave them and get longer hoses. hope this helps.

Ok, that's kind of where I figured this was heading. I can bolt the whole upper and lower control arms from the 71-87 right on as well, right? Also, is there any way to identify the parts on the 71-87's as opposed to 88 and up? Just want to make sure when I go on the hunt (if the rest of the vehicle isn't there).

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

And to that end...picked up spindles, rotors, upper/lower control arms for $120 off a 73-87, so guess no need to worry about a bracket anymore.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I just used a donor and unbolted my 66 8 lug complete front suspension crossmember and all and rolled in one from an 82. Easy and cheap! all one shot. drill two extra holes and if i remeber right, elongate two holes.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

The '71-'87 lower control arms will not bolt up to the '63-'66 C20 suspension crossmember. On the '63-'66 C20's the lower control arm shafts are flat, so there is no sadddle on the crossmember as there is on the '67 and up C20's. The '71-'87 lower control arm shafts are round and require the saddle on the crossmember. Before you get too carried away, check to see if the '71-'87 lower balljoints will fit the '63-'66 lower control arms. If not, you can either switch the control arm shafts, or the entire crossmember.

would that also be the case on a 64 C30, would i be able use a entire crossmember from a donor truck that has disk brakes.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Yes. But you will want to look for a '73-'86 C30 or '87-'91 R30 (R3500) with dual wheels, since your '64 is a dually. The front hubs, rotors and spindles are different than for a single wheel C30 or a C20.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

I have a complete change-over crossmember to covert that C-30 to discs and its all new. I bought brand new control arm from dorman-come with balljoints and shaft kits installed-about $125 each. Also has new hubs/rotors, calipers, pads, bearings, seals, tie rods, hoses,Monroe Magnum shocks. Only about 2000 miles on it all.

it's the 1976 chevy dually discs, with the JB 8 brake setup(largest GM made then)

I am selling as a unit, ready to bolt it w/sway bar, the frame stiffener plates that are OEM, bolts, etc.

PM me if anyone needs it- can be shipped truck freight.

thanks, for the info, so then i was off to Craigslist land and found one as you stated, i will pull it next week, i got it for $100.00 for everything, so i'm feeling pretty good so for around what i have in parts and the brackets i bought from you,i should have have P/S P/B with disks and be in at around $300.00 it pays to do research.

Re: 8 Lug Disc Brake Conversion Kit

Captianfab, is there any way to tell just which setup it is for the single wheel vs the dually for the later C30's? I have a full cross member off a later C30 for my 1964 C30 dually, how can I tell which later front I have? I'd just change the entire cross member, but the person that gave me the thing cut it off literally around the rear bolts to the A arms, and it ain't pretty, and isn't going to be workable to fit up.
