rear end swaps

87 1/2 ton 10 bolt / 5 lug

please list direct swaps that will bolt right in (burb,blazers/ c10-20)
also spilnes

looking to find something with better then 2.73 gears.
there is a 10 bolt 5 lug from a 86 at my local pick and pull but its got 3.08 gears i dont think it will be worth it.

Question Re: rear end swaps

Unless you have a manual or overdrive (700R4) transmission I wouldn't go higher than 3.08. A 3.73 is the max if you have a TH350 slush box, anything higher than that and you'll run out of pedal on the freeway.

Not sure what you're after here, are you building it for 1/4 mile launches?

Re: rear end swaps

I myself find 3.73's very streetable without an overdrive, as long as you run at least a 28" tire. I can cruise at 65 mph and it's only spinning 2800 rpms. Pretty comfortable compared to my 4.88 car

Driven accross country twice with 3.73's and no overdrive. I think you guys are getting soft with all your creature comforts

Re: rear end swaps

I run a '77 12 bolt 3.08 under my 83. I ditched the 2.73 gears because they whined. 3.08's with a <27" tires are okay. Any larger and 3.42 or 3.73 are better. 18.5 MPG at 70 MPH. 13-15 city with my foot out of it.

You just need power and full throttle to really light them up!!

Re: rear end swaps

Check the RPO codes.
The first letter code is a G

Re: rear end swaps

The burb will be 6 lugs..Unless its 2wd.
3.73 and the 700r tranny is a real nice setup. with a 29" tire 2000rpm at 65mph.
Nice highway cruising and you can smoke the tires too...

Re: rear end swaps

Van rear end is going to be different. You'll be wanting to look at the square bodies only, C10 trucks and suburbans.

4x2, 2.73 ratio (opt GU2)
4x2, 3.08 ratio (opt GU4)
4x2, 3.42 ratio (opt GU6)
4x2, 3.73 ratio (opt GT4)

I personally like the 3.42's in my 87 and it will probably be one of the most common ratios you'll find in the junk yards.

Re: rear end swaps

The 8.5" 10 bolts were 28 spline until about the 1988 model year when the change over to 30 spline axles began. I've seen some with and without till about 1990, then they all seem to be 30 spline.

I'm speaking soley on the 8.5" 10 bolts that were used in 1/2 ton trucks after about 1980. Not sure what the 4x4's would have had for a rearend but I assume 8.5's in the 1/2 ton 4x4 also. Anything heavier (3/4 ton and up) should have a corporate 14 bolt I believe.

Re: rear end swaps

I grabbed a posi out of a burb and 5 lug axles out of 90s pickup.
So now I have a 30 spline posi. The axles are about 7/16" longer.
Used a pair of Buick roadmaster drums to compensate.

Re: rear end swaps

You can find a Caddy or Lincoln 5X5 disc rear end too. Just weld new perches and mount.
