Tail lamps
Just got correct tail lamp housings from Ecklers for my '56 Stepside. Previous owner built the truck with Haywire wiring. Wires to the driver's side tail lamp are yellow (turn signal) and brown. Wires to the passenger side are green (turn signal) and tan. Wires from the supplied Ecklers units are white and black, and are not yet connected to the lamps. I could use some help in wiring this correctly. Thanks!

The housing is your ground,black and white are your stop/signal and tail lights .
Hold the housing to you negative - battery post, then touch the black wire to the positive + post and note the brightness then repeat with the white wire. Now you know which is the tail light and which is the stop/signal light wire. Now go mount them a hook up the wires. Be sure you have a good ground, use star washers on the mount and be sure to use ground wires to the body and chassis. And your done. |

It looks like the Haywire setup uses OEM GM color coding that has been the same since they went to plastic coated wiring on all GM vehicles that I know of. The green and yellow being the turn signals as you mentioned and the brown/tan being the tail lights.
G&G'S 57GMC nailed it as far as checking the lights go. It could be worse, the po could have wired the whole truck with red wire like my buddy's old 29 A roadster was back in the late 70's That wasn't fun to troubleshoot the tail lights on on the side of the road headed to a rod run. |

The PO did so-so with the wiring. Didn't leave enough slack in some areas, and made some bad connections--merely twisting wires together and taping them!
The weirdest thing he did is that he reversed the terminals on the brake light switch, and used the orange brake wire as the power source to the headlight switch. Fortunately, Haywire gives you an accessory main power wire, so I was able to put that on the battery lead on the headlight switch and put the brake light leads on correctly. |
