1956 Chevy Truck column/steering removal
How do I separate the steering box from the steering column on a stock 1956 Chevy truck? I have a new steering box that I would like to mount. Thanks

The only way to separate them is cut the shaft from the box. It's made as a one piece unit..

Re: 1956 Chevy Truck column/steering removal
I know but if you have a good box and can mount it you can cut the column off the box and use the stock column to keep the stock look if want.. a little extra work but it can be done..
we use the stock column a lot but the box has been changed out to a rack steering.. |

Re: 1956 Chevy Truck column/steering removal
The other box is mounted to another column. My column is in better shape. Maybe I should think about a new system. Problem is I'm still running an inline six engine and just bought a 3" drop axle.

Re: 1956 Chevy Truck column/steering removal
What type box are you putting on the truck?
1. Take the blinker assembly off and the bolts underdash 2. remove the pitman arm and bolts that hold the box on to the frame. 3 Pull the complete coulmn out from the bottom of the truck. CPP has a kit that has a bearing for the stock column and a borgensen style u-joint for stock coulmn conversion you will have to call them I didn't see it on thier website.

Re: 1956 Chevy Truck column/steering removal
It's a stock system from another 1956. I bought the entire underneath except the frame so there should be any issues. I just wanted to use my colum with the parts I got from the other truck but the column is attached to that steering box. I will probably do what you said and just switch everything out from the other parts I Bought. Thanks again for the advice.
