Who makes a good tap and die set for general use ,auto ,mowers ,bikes and around the house ?

Climb on any SnapOn, Mac or Cornwell truck and get a set and be happy. I guess you could go to harbor freight and save a lot of money and end up cussing some day. Like anything else in life, if you want the quality things you have to pay a little for them.

I have a set made by Irwin that I use or someone in the shop uses daily. They were less than a few other brands and work great for me. I use their drill bits too. I love em.

I have a harbor freight metric tap and die set, and an IRWIN (I think from lowes) std set. Both work fine. The harbor freight set was cheaper and had more taps and dies.

Bolt shops like Fasten-All can supply you with a good set if you have trouble tracking down a mobile tool truck.

I have been using a set made by Irwin for years as well. It works great.
My current employer has a few sets of Irwin as shop sets too.

Cheap taps are never a good thing. Its a very hard lesson learned. If you break off a tap down in a hole it will cost you a couple hundred bucks in drill bits to get it out. Not a risk I like to take. Regardless of anything else junk hardened steel is still hardened steel and I doubt you have a drill bit capable or drilling through a tap. You get what you pay for especially in this case. Yes any brand can break and they do but your chances of breakage are a lot smaller with a good name brand set.

I have a snap on, craftsman, and harbor freight metric set. The craftsman taps are junk and dull/ break easier than the other two. Sears wont warranty their taps anymore either. The harbor freight and snap on are both warranied and have held up well.

Don't worry about the name on the box as much as the material the taps are made from. Look for HSS (high speed steel) in the name and AVOID any tap that has the words "carbon steel" in their name.
