Firewall Paint

Got all the front sheetmetal off this weekend. Gonna need some parts! Now I'm trying to decide if I want to paint the firewall black or body color. Bad part is I don't even know what color I'm painting it yet!

Re: Firewall Paint

go with fawn, regardless (if you're doing your interior in the factory original fawn, that is)... what year is your truck? what was original int color?

Many discussions on here about factory firewall color, and the consensus was finally that "it depends" where your truck came from, and about a dozen othe variables. Some came black, some came int color, etc. I don't believe any came body color.

If you're customizing, then all bets are off, flip a coin between black and body color. I assumed mine was black until I did some much needed brake repair and discovered the fawn (and prompted the earlier discussion). Last one posted for comparison. I like black too, but if I ever redo mine, will probably go back to fawn.

Re: Firewall Paint

My son painted his truck hot rod black with an orange interior and orange under the hood, it looks real good.

I am painting the firewall in my 67 black because I live out in the country on an old gravel road and the truck will be driven often on unpaved roads.

A lof of people paint the firewall the body color and it looks real good.

Go with the color that makes you happy.

Re: Firewall Paint

I thought a lot about this too, but finally decided to go all body color---firewall, inner fenders and core support.

Finally decided on a color as well, Im going with the 2011 ford "red candy"
its about as close to cnady apple red as youll get from the factory---and should be easier to paint than actual candy apple

My '72 C-10 came from the factory with the same Red Orange as is on the exterior.

Re: Firewall Paint

I debated this a LOT myself. It is totally personal preference. I spent a lot of time shaving my firewall but will be going with a semi gloss black firewall. For me, it helps understate the work I did on firewall and lets my engine pop. Plus I will drive it, a lot. Easier to clean and touchup if needed.

Re: Firewall Paint

I believe that every original 67-72 I have seen has had body color on firewall and satin black on inner fenders, core support, and underhood.

OOOOooopppps...... My apologies, I "swing" between 60-66 and 67-72 sites, thought I was posting on the 60-66 side (hence the pictures). I feel like an idiot.

On a 67-72, I'd go with the some semi-gloss black (as was mentioned above, it kinda highlights the engine color in my mind). Custom stuff, whatever ya feel like. Body color always good too. Again, my apologies. But I'm sure nobody had run out and bought fawn paint on account of my errant post yet

Re: Firewall Paint

I'm not sure if it works for anyone else or not, but I didn't have the dough or inclination to get the cab down to a painter, or hire a painter to come out and do the interior and firewall. My build dictated that I get the firewall done, then the inner fenders, so I could continue the work. I had settled on a "black cherry" color for the exterior, and hoped I could go that way with the interior, too.

But money and time had me buy some single stage paint, paint the interior, inner fenders and firewall a color that would be at least "complimentary" to the final paint code on the "Black Cherry".

Here'are a few shots. Over some time.

I'd generally say that I agree with the satin black in the compartment and the body color on the firewall. But life doesn't always follow the plan.

And, in the end, making it a personal statement is what it's all about.

Re: Firewall Paint

When in doubt, paint it low gloss black to match the other under hood sheet metal. I'd paint it body color if you figure out what that is. I'm not sure what color my truck will be,although I've been sticking with one idea for a while now. I never decide till it's time to buy.
