1964-1966 Radio Cut Out and ipod
I have 1965 with original factory radio cut-out. I am considering putting a hidden ipod system in similar to
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=11082 I've gotta get a decent looking AM radio that is not pitted (does not need to work) that fits my cutout..I know 1964-1966 trucks were all the same size cutout....I have also read here http://rmcavoy.freeshell.org/radio.html that 1963 and 1964 full size car am radios will fit also, but there could be issues with the right shaft being recessed. Anyone have any first hand knowledge on this? |

And yes, the recessed mounting area on the right shaft on the car radios would be an issue when trying to mount one in a truck dash. You'd have to enlarge the shaft hole in the dash and make use of the cupped mounting washer that goes with the car radio. Probably not the type of thing you'd want to do if you're wanting to keep the radio cutout in the dash completely stock. |

You're welcome! Given the modifications you're planning on doing to the radio, you might still be able to get away with using a car radio after all. The threaded mounting collar/sleeve that's around the RH shaft is the part that's recessed back on the car radios (and not long enough to reach through the hole in the truck dash). But I'm thinking that collar/sleeve could easily be replaced by a bolt that is long enough to reach. You'd either have to drill a hole down through the center of the bolt for the shaft or just deep enough to secure a stub shaft for a dummy knob if the "tuner" knob doesn't have to be functional for anything in your new setup. |

Re: 1964-1966 Radio Cut Out and ipod
Thanks Ray...kinda depends if I want the right knob/shaft working I guess...atm I am thinking just the left shaft will be used so a dummy knob is fine. It appears the 63/64 am car radios on ebay are cheaper and have better chrome/face than most of the truck radios. I'll post pictures of build when I get a radio.

Re: 1964-1966 Radio Cut Out and ipod
Hi John,
I did a little more investigating this morning and it looks as though both the car and truck radios have that recessed area cast into the faceplate around the RH shaft. On the truck radios, they just used a longer mounting collar around the shaft so it extends out far enough to go directly through the small hole in the dash. More or less the same idea as the home-made drilled out bolt I described. I also noticed that enlarging the RH hole on a truck dash and using the car style cupped mounting washer would not be a good idea for anyone wanting to use the original truck radio knobs. That's because the truck inner knobs are smaller and not quite large enough to hide the outer edge of the cupped washer. So in summary, if a person had access to both a car and truck radio and wanted to interchange them, it would simply be a matter of swapping out the mounting collar & attaching nut that's around the RH shaft. The bracket that supports the rear of the radio is different for car vs. truck too but that should be easy enough to fabricate if necessary. |
