Rearend Question ...
I have a posi rearend out of my 1963 GMC Truck , and I know its different from the one in my 1962 Chevy .. Leaf / Coil .. I'm wondering if it would be worth my time to have the proper brackets welded on to properly install in my truck or use the posi rearend out of a 1988 Suburban and do the same .. Parts maybe more common and cheaper than the old stuff ... Not sure what to do .. Want to stay with 6 Lug right now ..

If you use the '88 Suburban rear, it will be 1.5" wider drum-to-drum versus your stock '62 rear. To eliminate a bunch of bracket swapping, you can convert over to a different track bar mount style (a great kit is the Super Track Bar kit from Early Classic). You will have to buy a pair of perches, but those are cheap. The problem with some of the older rears is the lack of replacement parts, especially the 3/4 ton and up rears.
I went with the rear from my '79 Suburban donor, but in order to fit my rear wheel/tire combo, I'm narrowing it a total of 4". So much for staying cheap......

Are they both 12 bolts? Why can't you just swap out carriers and ring and pinion into your current rear end?

62 chevy was a 10 bolt rear end. 12 bolt was started in 63

gmc is a dana 44 probably 3:54 gears. parts are easy to find because all of the 4x4 guy's use these rear ends today.and they were used in fords and jeeps for a long time.
