Why does my sub squeak?

I have a clarion sub (not new) that came with my truck. It makes ok bass but squeaks like crazy. Why is this?

The only part I can think on a speaker that can cause a "squeak" is I think the voice coil (or maybe it's the motor) contacting at movement. Does it squeak if you just push the speaker in without it on?

The only other thing is maybe it's more of a whistle coming from a port?...

I'm just guessing....someone got the voice coil a little hot. I've had older subs react weird to extreme heat and or extreme cold. Of course that's after I've beaten the piss out of em.

So...its shot? Or could checking for air leaks whistling fix it? It doesnt squeak when I pjsh it in manually.

Pull the sub out of the box and play it, does it still squeak? If it does there is possibly an issue with the sub. If not air is leaking from the box/around the mounting surface of the sub.

Ditto...but more than likely it's the sub's voice coil's going out and time for a replacement. If you have anyone with the same size sub it'd be worth even popping it in to see if the squeek goes away.

My guess is the gasket around the mounting ring of the sub is going bye bye. I have the same issue on my Arc Audio subs in my '85.

sounds like a air leak or the wood in the box is moving, i would not think i would come from the sub. good luck

I've heard it come from the voice coil before. My suggestion towards the issue simply implies non-catastrophic issues (Read: hoping for the best)

Thanks for all the input, guys. I sealed around the sub and it still squeaked, so i felt for an ait leak and found a monster one between the metal center and the rubber surrounding it. I sealed that with clear silicone, and now it kicks with no flutter or squeakiness at all.

Great news! I hope that silicone lasts...I've never had good luck repairing a speaker cone.
