74 Chevy truck

I am supposed to go look at a 74 Chevy truck sitting in a barn for many years as soon as the grandson of the deceased owner gives me a call .All I know about the truck is that its a 74 step side and it still in the same barn for many years. I dont know what drive train or whether it is a long or short bed as all I can see is the very rear sticking out of the barn. What are the problem areas on these trucks to look for ? Cab corners ,rockers and what else should I be looking for rust wise? I was told it would be cheap but Im not sure what his version of cheap would be and it has not been started in years.
Thanks John

PS : I really dont need another truck as Im doing a frame off on my 72 but I cant seem to resist the urge to go see it.

Re: 74 Chevy truck

The lower rear quarter panels, although not as common a problem on stepsides than on fleetsides from what i have seen.

The seam sealer area of the door jamb over right past the a pillar.

Re: 74 Chevy truck

The step side was normally a short bed but they made a few long bed ones tho.

Re: 74 Chevy truck

I have a problem with my internet provider which for some reason blocks me from sending pics from my home computer so my wife has to e mail them to someone from her work computer to get them posted. But I do appreciate the offer of assistance .

Re: 74 Chevy truck

Well I went and looked at the barn truck and there was so much stuff in and around it that I could not give it a great inspection but I bought it anyway. It is a shortbed stepside ,6 cylinder ,3 speed on the column with 56,000 original one owner miles. The only rust I could easily find was the front of the bed where the wood stops and there is a good sized dent on the lower driver door. The seat looks like new ,the rubber mat also looks like new ,the dash pad had one split across the center .It is a pretty basic truck with AM pushbutton radio and that is about it. It will not be coming home with me as I dont currently have room for it so I will be having it hauled to the bodyshop that is currently working on my 72 truck until I can get it running. I guess I need to call the bodyshop tomorrow and let them know it will be coming in a few days. I got a few pics but cant upload them but my wife can e mail them to someone if youre willing to post them. I cant wait to get it to the bodyshop so I can better inspect it.

Send us the factort codes from the glove box, that could b a very rare truck, most states stop smog at 75 so that bein the first year of a square and presmog is rare, here without seein it id say 3k bottom line, sense its presmog. If its factory 6 3on tree , alota older gents would pay good money!! Just my insight!!

Re: 74 Chevy truck

The guy in the pic is the son of the original owner ,I wish I was that slim. We got the truck out of the barn and hauled to the bodyshop where Im going to store it until I get it running possibly tomorrow. It was in pretty good shape considering ,it had rust in the passenger fender cup which I expected and the passenger door skin has a small amount of rust .The only other rust is in the bed where the front of the bed wood meets the header panel .The rocker panels are nice and the interior is nice ,seat is perfect .The guys at the bodyshop could not believe how solid it is. My pics today didnt turn out due to camera or operator malfunction. I will try for more pics tomorrow. Thankyou again J Knight for posting the pics for me.

Re: 74 Chevy truck

I got the old truck to run today for the first time in over 20 years .I sprayed a little lube into each cylinder and let it soak while I installed a fresh hot battery and poured in some gas. I then primed the carb and she fired right up and ran like a 6 cylinder sewing machine. I then took the 4 van rallys off my 72 frame and replaced the 4 flat tires and took her for a test ride. She drives very nice ,I also took more pics.

oh please tell me you ar going to put a spare tire on the fender! i think it would loo great cleaned up with a matching spare on the fender. thae ralleys look good but personall yi would keep teh stock wheels. just my opinion, its a good looking truck thoughm you can even back it up to your house and use the bumper as a porch
