New purchase 1968 4WD LWB. Question.

I drove from Oklahoma to Mississippi to get this yesterday. It's all original. It has 17.5 in rims on it and I also have 16s with the mud tires. Does anyone know where I can get the 17.5 in mud tires?

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LNB. Question.

Man congrats on the truck. I have been watching this truck for sale for a while. Glad to see someone on the board got it. It looks like it is in really good shape.

I am not sure on the 17.5's. Will have to do some searching on the internet for some tires.

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LNB. Question.

Welcome to the forum!

Great score on your new old 1968 K20!
I love the early 4x4's, and looks like you got a nice survivor.

Those 17.5 wheels I think are going to really limit your tire selection, and you may be better to look for a set of 16" steel wheels. Then you will have the choice of just about any brand and tread design you want.

BTW, interesting heater hose shut off it has.

I bought a '67 parts truck a while back that has one 17.5 wheel on it. It's the first one I have actually seen in person. It has a mud tire on it but i don't have a clue where you might find new ones.

On another note, my '70 Chevy Pickup has the same under dash air unit as that and it works like a champ...

I look forward to being on the forum and thanks. It came with another set of 16 in steels and mudders on them which I'll be putting on. I love this truck.

Hey, do you guys buy parts like brake stuff from a classic parts place online or do you just go down to the parts store ? I didn't know if there was a difference in the parts.

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LNB. Question.

Welcome to the sight from a fellow K/20 fan (addict). I love that Stepside! I use my local Napa store for service parts and just get trim parts and such from the truck specialty vendors...the type of things that used to be dealership-only. Have you tried Coker or Universal Tire, yet?

Universal has these:

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LNB. Question.

You may have to order the spring kit and wheel cylinder from NAPA, but all in all it's the same brand and everything that a classic truck vendor will sell you.

Check to make sure you have either 11" or 12" drums.
My burb is a 68 K20, and you have what looks like the same stuff I have for axles. I have 12" drums, and everything is different with the brakes as compared to 11". That being said, it will take time to find those parts and an exercise in your patience trying to explain the difference in the two.

It pains me, but I am planning to swap out my axles for 1972 K20 axles with disc and 11" drum.

Don't throw away any of the springs, wheel cylinders, or drums until you get the new part in front of you to compare since the differences are slight.

Coker didn't have anything that I could see. Universal does and I posted a link in my prior thread above.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Thanks for the link special K. Andy the box in the cab is an early AC converter and you can see the big green cable running down the windshield post on the driver's side. My guess is it was to run that big nasty winch.

Where's the best place for restoration parts for 67-72? Like original seat covers etc.

I thought it was I missed the cable the first time around though.
Just about all the sponsor carry that stuff. I like Manes myself.

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LWB. Question.

Wow! that is a clean one...I have the same model, but yours appears to have power brakes....does it have power steering too?

Where did you find it? Craigslist? Mine came from a business contact (totally accidental)....I didn't know I wanted a 1968 until I saw it.

What are your plans for this green machine? It looks very drivable as-is....someone posted in my thread that there were only a little over 1000 trucks built like this - K20, step-side, 4x4.

I like it!

Re: New purchase 1968 4WD LWB. Question.

Scotty, I found it on Craigs list in Mississippi. I was so excited when I found it I grabbed uhaul trailer and drove 8 hours one way to get it and back the same day! It was like putting an elephant on a roller skate and had to drive 54 mph all the way back LOL. It does have power stearing. I ordered a new booster and master cylinder from NAPA but I can't find the short lines from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve. I guess I may have to bend them myself.

If anyone knows of a rear view mirror and bracket for a 68 please let me know. I guess I can't post in the WTB section yet.

Thanks

That is quite a story...I would have done the same thing though.

I don't know about the brake lines...I have a bender and a flaring tool, so I can make my own...as the others have said, take your old parts to the store with you, the parts guys computer often is incorrect about what fits these trucks...I have been around and around with them and now carry the cores in with me.

It looks like you have a good platform to start with, keep the pictures and updates coming.
