Front End Question
We are replacing all the front end parts on my 65 C10, and not sure about something. We replaced the cross shafts in the lower control arms, but forgot to take measurements on a few things. We aren't sure about the measurements going front to back on the U-bolts, so everything is aligned. We were wondering if anyone could tell us anything?

Re: Front End Question
The lower shafts have dimpled holes in the shaft that line up with a pin on the crossmember. The pin is in the seat area where the u bolts go through. Should only be one that sticks out, I think it's on the front seat, IIRC.
If your shafts don't have the dimple, go get ones that do as they help to locate the shafts and keep them from slipping when you hit something hard.

Re: Front End Question
Do you mean the rivet that went through the saddles? Because we cut those out and replaced the saddles, and we replaced the rivets with cap-head screws.

Re: Front End Question
I agree
The shafts need to have the dimples in them to help keep them in place. Also while you are at this point, consider upgrading the U-bolts to the larger diameter '73-'87 pieces. You will have to drill out the crossmember, but well worth it in my opinion. I have had 2 stock ones break on me in the past. Luckily it happened at a time when it did not cause any major damage. Re: Front End Question
We put larger u bolts and new saddles in, but we are unsure where the pin is to line everything up. We replaced the rivets with button head allen bolts, not cap head bolts.

Re: Front End Question
Well then you might have to change those button heads to allen socket bolts with possible a couple washers under them to get them high enough to register in the lower control arm shafts. Before you install those new bolts, I would check to be sure they fit into the drilled hole (dimple) that is in the shafts. This way if they are too big, they can be turned down to the correct size.

Re: Front End Question
Where should the dimple be on the shaft, to the front or rear. Thanks for the help.

Re: Front End Question
The cross shaft should have 2 dimples, and they are the same part# on each side and are interchangeable. Use a Grade 8 socket head cap screw, and you'll have even better penetration than the factory rivets had.

Re: Front End Question
what if there is only one dimple in the shaft, and they are both facing the back, and need to be spun around? Should they be facing to the front or back of the truck? And also, do we need to tear the whole thing apart again, because we just realised this after we spent two days putting the front end together. Thanks for all the help.
