truck wont stay running while driving
i hope you all can help as i dont know what to do anymore, my truck starts and runs fine even when you put it into drive it stays running, but when you get about a block distance or more it seems like its losing power and when you give it gas it tries to die or just dies completely
once you start it again it just wants to do it right away when u start driving, the truck has a brand new carb on it, it was doing it with the old one too, new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, the amp gauge shows a good charge so the alt and battery should be good and iv checked all my vac lines and it has gas i checked lol and added more what else am i missing? any ideas??? |

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
I had a similar problem years ago on a 72, my issue was a kinked fuel line. Since the gas tank was above the line, gas would slowly drain past the kink and fill up the fuel line. When I would start the truck, it would pull all the fuel from the line and run for a little while, but couldn't pull any past the kink. So when the fuel in the line ran out, it died. Letting the truck sit for several hours would allow the fuel line to fill up again.
I'd recommend a small inline fuel pressure gauge right before the carb. They're relatively cheap (I think mine was $6.50 ) and will tell you if you're getting proper fuel pressure. Easy way to find or rule out at least one of your main possibilities.

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
Pop the dist cap and check those two little springs, make sure theyre still there and opening properly. Then id check for fuel, if it was starved it would cough and spudder then die. If its weight problem it will back fire and die or just die. But these trucks will run on 3 dead cylnders, so a fuel issue is most likely the problem.

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
i replaced the coil already where is this module your talking about? i just put a new fuel pump on it yesterday but its still doing it, no kinked fuel lines and the truck will start right away after it dies no waiting
could it possibly be the timing??? im inches away from selling my truck im so pissed at it, ic spent almost 3 grand on it between the motor, tires, exhaust and interior that im at the point where i dont want to spend anymore money on it or screwing with it |

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
the module is in the dist, what the wires from the cap hook to, has 2 wires on 1 end and 2 wires on the other, kind angled shaped,

pop the cap, u will see two claws, they will b anchored by 2 springs, 1)check if they are present 2)take ur finger and gently pry them apart, they should move freely, and spring back into place. they work just like a centrifugal clutch. when spun quickly they throw outward thus creating igniton advance. if they fail to work, the truck will sputter, and run ritch. the fix depends if they are sticking or broken springs, report findings and well go from there. also, have u checked the vaccum advance? that could also b a problem. check the line for corrosion/holes/vac leak. idk what he is talking about, i have always ran hei. i refuse to use points, so ask him what hes talkn about i am not familiar with the stock coil type dist. |

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
ok, then ur "module" will be UNDER the weights, it could b bad, but chances r its not. when they fail they usually just quit.
check those weights, see if they are sticking, make sure the springs r still there.... also, pull cyl #1's spark plug and take a pic, if u cant take a pic, report the color. that will tell us ALOT |

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
It could be a lot of different things. Have you checked your fuel pressure at the carb? You could have something in the tank or line that is restricting the flow.

Re: truck wont stay running while driving
thanks for the pics motonut i will check mine tomorrow since its been raining,
thsickc10 when im driving it feels like its losing power and when you give it gas it cuts out like its going to die, doesnt matter if you gently give it a lil bit of gas or ush the pedal in half way basically same scenario no matter what also no pics of spark plug due to the above mentioned rain |
