Hood latch problem

I have a 1970 w/hood latch issues. It will not pop up when released. I also have some hood adjusments to do, but I do not think this is related. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The hood adjustment could have an effect on the latch, it should be adjusted first. If the hood is causing the pin not to be in the center of the latch it may be dragging and therefor hard to release.

Yes -- besides the latch, lube all the joints in the hinges too.

The hood latch spring isn't missing.... right?

No spring is there. Just wondering if hinges can just wear out?

Yes, they can.... but if the latch on your '70 is anything like my '72, the spring is what gives the hood that initial push upward when you release the latch.

Can someone with a '69 or '70 verify whether the hood latch is supposed to have a spring?

Re: Hood latch problem

^^ Good catch, Cliff. I'm a literal person, so I read it just as he wrote it -- "no spring is there".

Never realized he may have intended to say "no, the spring is there".

Guess we'll find out in time.....

Re: Hood latch problem

Curious about this also. My 71 does not have a spring on the hood latch mechanism and wondered if it was supposed to have one

Re: Hood latch problem

Guys, I apologize -- my memory has failed me again, I could have sworn there was a spring (actually, I thought it was attached to the hood, where it contacts the latch). Anyway, I just looked and the only springs (that lift the hood) are on the hood hinges.

So, to 70sarver -- maybe your hood hinge springs are weakened -- but as said, first try lubing every moving part on each hinge.

Re: Hood latch problem

Does it not open, or not 'pop up' ? If it doesn't budge, I'd say adjustment, the latch might not be clearing the plate on the hood. If it doesn't pop up, but you can still lift it no problem, perhaps your springs are worn out. Adjust, clean, and lube. If the hood is aligned pretty good, both the latch plate on the grill/core support, and the plate on the hood do adjust a bit, don't forget the pin can be adjusted up/down as well, just a screw and jamb nut, oh and also, the pads near the fenders on the core support adjust up/down as well, same thing screw w/jamb nut. If those two pads are adjusted too high it'll cause problems as well.
