Starter and Alternator question
So, my 2002 5.3 (from a Yukon) came with everything except a starter and alternator. I do not have the VIN, my computer came from a different truck so I can't decode. As I search online for a replacement I have found a couple options (there may be more).
Alternators 105 amp 130 amp 145 amp Question : Which one to get, will the 105 amp be adequate with E-fans? Ive heard they need extra power. Is this true? Starters 9 tooth 11 tooth And 1-2 kw Question: I have no idea how to figure out what I need. Thanks for any help -Mike |

Re: Starter and Alternator question
First question I have is what is this going in to and second have you added up all the amps that you will draw with the vehicle running? Do you plan to add a stereo system with big amps? As far as the starter goes I would ask the local chevy dealer parts counter or google which starter was used on that yukon.

Re: Starter and Alternator question
Since there isn't a ton of electrical draw on these trucks, the 105 would get you by. The alt on my sbc was only 85amp and did just fine. Add in things like modern lighting, stereo and fuel injection and even then the 105 should be ok.
Fwiw, I ended up getting a 145 since it's what came with my bracket....and there's no way I'll ever come close to using that much amperage. They also made a 160amp on certain HD's and Express vans.

Re: Starter and Alternator question
Thanks guys for the input. I guess I made this more complicated than it needed to be. I just wasn't sure if you could just put a higher rated alternator without problems. From what I have found you can go up to a 145 amp without having to change the wiring. I will probably just get the 130 cause it is priced right.

Re: Starter and Alternator question
I was at the local pick a part today and looked at a GM alternator and it had a label on the back with the part number and 105A, so I assume many had labels at one time. Also, in my research the clock position of the connector is different. Same connector just different position.
