12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
I have a 6 lug 12 bolt truck rearend with 4:11 gears in my truck now. I am wanting to convert over to 5 lug. I have a couple spare 12 bolt rearends with 5 lug axles in them. Can I just pull the axles out of the 5 lug parts rearend and put them into the rearend that originally had the 6 lug in it? If so or if not what do I need to do? Thanks

Re: 12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
For the most part yes you can, they changed the rear end width mid 70's sometime.Measure the width from face of drum to other face of drum and see if the width is the same,if so then they will swap over.I had a narrow rear and used wider axle's,I made a 3/4" spacer to go in between the backing plate and axle housing. the rears are 1 1/2" differance between the 2 ,been running it hat way for 5 yrs and no problem.

Re: 12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
If your truck's rear end is a 1970, there is a good chance that it has the wider housing, and 5 lug axles would pop right in with no problem.

Re: 12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
It is actually in a '67 pickup, but I am pretty sure that one of the extra 12 bolts I have is out of a '69 if I'm not mistaken. Oh well, I guess I'll have to let the tape measure do the talkin!

Re: 12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
What I have is the shorter '67 12 bolt and my extra parts rearends are the newer style longer housings. What should I do to convert to five lug? I would prefer to stick with the shorter housing so I can fit bigger tires, or should I just out one of the newer style housings under there?

If you have access to a mill I am pretty sure you can redrill your axles to 5 lug

Aftermarket 5-lug axles is your answer.
Moser Engineering or Early Classic Enterprises can fix you up.

Re: 12 bolt rearend, 6 lug to 5 lug
we sell the axles. We also shorten and respline axles, housings, build pro stock rear ends from scratch ,redrill and plug etc. Just for info.
I think we are 90 to redrill and 50 to plug and pair of axles |
