Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

Nobody has one of these? How about a picture with some dimensions so I could find something close or make one? Length, wire diameter, number of coils, diameter of coils? Any help would be appreciated!

I have to check my truck, but I might have one on my original cab. Will get back to you.

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

Here are a couple pictures of what you are looking for. They are VERY hard to find, and, if present at all, they are usually broken due to weather exposure. I have rarely seen them intact. The spring is very "stout". The wire seems highly tempered and measures 0.50". The curved ends are offset 90 degrees.

THis spring is NOT for sale.

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

Ok, so I missed the part where you said "a/c" cab. My original cab not being a/c, probably does not have it. The cab I am replacing it with is an a/c cab, and there is a slim possibility I may have a spare.

However, I am now not really sure where the spring is actually located. Can you post a pic of where it is supposed to be?

Oops... I see I made a mistake in my post. The wire is 0.050" in diameter. Also, the I.D. of the coiled portion is 0.255".

Thumbs up Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

Great info and pics guys! I am still looking so keep me in mind if anyone has one to sell. In the meantime I am going to try to make one from scratch or modify an existing spring from firstowner69's pics and info. We'll see how it goes. Thanks again to all who chimed in on my question. You were all a great help!

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

Thanks for the Info FirstOwner69! that is some great description and Im sure it will help a lot!

That being said I have to say it looks a lot like a small carb return spring, like the ones that have two springs one small inside of a larger diameter. they sell them (universal) at auto parts stores in a variety of sizes and lengths. Some have hooked ends, some have straight ends that you bend to length as needed. Also locally at Ace hardware, maybe a hardware store would have one that would be close to the original size?

Here are a couple universal parts store carb springs, the chrome one is close but almost double the OD at the coiled section.

I looked at those too. However, they are much weaker than the original. I'm not sure why the originals have to be as strong as they are. Before I found mine, I modified a hardware store spring. It's stronger than the carb return springs, but still weaker than the originals. I have not tried it in my truck as it's in pieces at the moment.

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

My camera quit as I went to take some pics for DD1. Here are some pics I found on the board that might help. The spring goes from the ear on the top of the flapper door to a hole in the cowl located just under the passenger side windshield wiper. I hope this helps.

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

The local Ace hardware where I live has a good spring assortment and you might be able to find an extension spring that will work if are lucky. A longer spring can be cut and rebent.

Good luck!

Re: WTB: Spring for fresh air door.

I will take a look there to. Found a universal spring assortment at advanced auto that I can cut to length and be close to original. Still would like an original if I could find one. Thanks for the help.
