Local find,, really local..

A lot of you know I roam central - south central Tennessee looking for trucks. Great people, good food and excellent sweet tea,, oh yea, trucks too. Anyway, we were in nashville last weekend at the Goodguys and were trying to cut a few deals on some trucks in the area. Logistics, schedules, differing opinions,, you name it,,, we came home empty. Looked on our local Craiglist and saw a shortbed in our area. We texted, discussed and finally decided to meet. As the owner was giving directions, they kept going towards my neighborhood. The end result, 72 GMC short wide,TWO blocks from my house. You never know... Owner just drove it down, I paid him, and he walked home...

yeah I saw that one, I found mine pretty close too. I was working on a job about 10 minutes from where the truck was. But I've done some traveling to buy parts... lol

Other than the Chevy fender that looks like a great truck!! I had a 71 short box that exact same color combo. Great looking truck you have.

Re: Local find,, really local..

Thanks guys. Called my son as he was getting off work at the steel mill and he just wasn't as excited as I had hoped he would be about it. Could have something to do with him working a 14 hour shift in the melting room,,,,, We will let him get some sleep and run it by him then. Hope he wants it, if not, it has to go.

Well,, son just wasn't feeling the truck like I did,, so I guess we are going to clean it up some and flip it. Couldn't believe how good shape the bed floor was in. Also, it is coil sprung and the spid says it has the highlander interior??

Probably going to ask right around $3,000.00 for it after we clean it up, oil change and a few other loose ends. Has the other rally wheel, just need to mount it.

Ok,, got the flat fixed. Now the wheels will all match. Getting ready to give it a bath, take some pics and find it a new home. Wish us luck.

Re: Local find,, really local..

True, you just never know how well a local deal will turn out. I needed a used 302 Ford motor fast and cheap for a guy who was moving out of state and needed his truck running in a few days. A block away was a very rusty but running '84 Econoline conversion van in a yard. He was asking $500. I offered $300 and he accepted. I paid him, got the title, drove home and walked back and got it about 5 minutes later. Stripped it that afternoon. Sold the engine (installed in the pickup) for $800. Sold the AOD transmission for $75. Put the battery in a tractor. Sold the tilt column on Ebay for $75. Sold the 9-inch posi chunk and 3.55 gears for $125. Filled the rest with scrap metal and crushed it for like $300 plus the radiator, condensor, evaporator, and heater core. I still have the 302 from the pickup that I could build if I wanted to. I like those kind of deals.

Also, pulling a motor from a van you don't care about is quite a lot of fun. I wanted it out complete; oil pan to air cleaner. I took a sawzall and cut the dash out all the way up to the windshield. Took the bumper off and the radiator and condensor. Sawzalled anything that was in the way. The motor comes out fairly easily then. With the dash in the way, I think you would have to pull the carb at least.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread. Local finds can be quite worthwhile.

Re: Local find,, really local..

Well, you know how it always goes. Have it listed for sale but Sunday we went and bought a 68 Chevy long bed with a 72 front cap on it. That front cap would look so good on this truck,,, if,, of course ,, it doesn't sell. Always got to have plan b,, and c,, and even d sometimes. Man, that black GMC you have is amazing. And i am not really a GMC front end sort of guy. Enjoyed watching the progress on the paint.
